Netscape Voted On Content Model

The Netscape.com model which is paying content submitters is terribly wrong, according to Derek Powazek. This is because when the submitter lives on a relationship that is based on getting paid, it never goes farther than that and when the money runs out, it’s time to pack up. JPG and Threadless do not pay for participation – instead they pay for letting them make real products from submitter work. For example, JPG magazine rewards people who submit photos to the site by publishing the voted-on winners and sharing a little cash. This means it gets unique content from users, which cannot be bought with money. In the JPG and Threadless model, everyone has equal opportunities of getting paid, whereas in the Netscape model only those people who have been choosen as Navigators get paid. In order to avoid distorters in the future, Netscape needs to have a one-party system where contributors get paid based on merit, and everybody has an equal shot at success. Isn’t that what equality is all about?
