YouTube Gazillions. Huge losses sink in!
November 04, 2006 |
Google probably guessed that when they purchased YouTube in October, not only were they adding a valuable marketing tool to their arsenal, but also deciding the future fate of that thing called TV. Google also probably guessed that they were about to take on board a huge legal fight that would probably cost them billions more than the $1.65 billion that the company, YouTube cost them.
UTube have already tried to sue them and it is reported that yesterday, Bayern Munich were following suit over fan-flimed footage of some games played last season which had been uploaded last season. According to the Financial Times, Google has been busy desparately making huge cash payouts as high as “tens of millions of dollars” to the companies considering suing them. According to the FT, a single un-named flim and TV company is receiving $100 million to license all of their content for the next two years.
Apparently, Google is talking with all of the big peas in the pod. CBS, Viacom, Time Warner, NBC Universal and News Corp, just being a few. There’s also an unconfirmed rumor flying about the mill, saying that purportedly, $500 million of the $1.6 billion purchase price has been reserved for litigation.
Whether there is any accuracy in that, we’re yet to find out, but if so, it clearly shows that Google is intent upon making YouTube into an even more legalized video sharing site than we would ever have expected. That’s a huge sum of money to be throwing about. At least it shows dedication. It’s either death or victory for YouTube, the day of reckoning comes ever closer. Most analysts however would be far too scared of their overhyped reputations to predict the demise of the once great YouTube.
