More people in Europe chat via their cell phones, whereas in the US, due to high costs, cellphone types and insufficient network structure, IM via the cell phone isn't as popular. But the bottom line is, this could be the next trend, and not simply a hype. The cell phone carriers, will have to think twice about the advantages and disadvantages of IM over their networks.
