DropBoks. Free. Practical. Easy. Speedy. Useful. They’re just some of the words I’d choose to describe the little website that allows you to have your own private hosting space on the net in seconds. Free hosting isn’t usually this good or reliable, but this, ladies and gentlemen, is one for the history books.
A tiny little startup that sprang out of nowhere. Sweet! Simply put, a very secure way to upload and download any file, provided that it’s less than 50MB in size. There’s a total of 1GB per account, but if you ever do run out of space, creating a new account literally takes seconds.
Why is this different? Well, firstly, like I mentioned, DropBoks is completely secure, not just an open host. It’s also a very quick and easy way to access files or links, that you just can’t be bothered sending to yourself. It’s very easy, or as we’d say in Manchester, ’simple as’. Any format, and every format is supported. You can have anything from your beloved MP3s to old WAVs, a couple of transparent PNGs and the odd BMP. Even an odd EXE or BAT has found it’s way onto my account.
The possibilites are endless, especially with the impressive upload time! Obviously, the more users join over the coming months, the slower it will get, and as the site isn’t advert supported (Great for the end user like myself!), means that it’s more unlikely that the site will be able to afford, more, dedicated servers and hosting plans. But why is DropBoks free? Well, they’re working on the assumption that if every user of their service donated $1, then they will able to keep the service up and running, and your files hosted for all of eternity, amen. But the thing is, although lots of you guys, being the philanthropic people you are, will be willing to donate, a large bunch of people just won’t. But at its current growth rate, even if just 50% of people did donate, they’d still see a rather impressive return rate.
Seriously though, sign-up to such a great service has never been easier. They don’t even want your name! Just your e-mail, your agreement to accept their terms, and for you to pick a password! If you’re not looking for a full blown, top of the range hoster, then without a doubt, I’d recommend DropBoks, firstly for its simplicity and secondly for its speed and overall appeal.
