You want to be a venture capitalist? You should definitely pass the Venture Capital Aptitude Test laid out by Guy Kawasaki. Is it difficult to answer his question “Who doesn’t want to have an easy job that pays half a million annually and in the same time owning a private jet?” It’s obvious, no one would say no to this kind of job.
He divided the test into 3 main sections. The first important aspect to put into consideration is your working experience. Based on experience, people from engineering and sales fields are the most prominent candidates for this job, while it’s better to avoid getting into venture capitalism with management, consulting, investment, banking and accounting background.
The second part is intended to find out whether or not you have first hand experience in certain areas. It’s good if you have been through the ups and downs of a startup cycle. It doesn’t matter whether or not you have succeeded. Because even if you failed with your first attempt, it does not mean that you would fail again. What’s more important is that you realize that you will only get what you give.
And the third part put to the test your necessary knowledge. Will you be able to provide the right guidance when entrepreneurs ask you? Most of their questions concern the ways to market their products and ethical aspects that surely will be encountered during the first few phases of their projects.
The best thing is that Guy even provides us with the crucial part of this test – the assessment section. This actually evaluates your readiness to become a venture capitalist. If you really want to know whether or not you’re qualified to be a venture capitalist, then I highly recommend you to take the test now. And please, don’t forget to let me know if you score over 40.
