Salesopedia: Encyclopedia of Sales

Svetlana Gladkova,

New portal again. This time it is all about sales and everything around sales. And thus the name - Salesopedia. Here is how the developers hint us that it is not just another sales-oriented portal but a real encyclopedia of sales instead.

Salesopedia is intended to build a community of sales-related people: managers, executives, marketing professionals, advertisers, etc. At a glance it seems that these specialists will find all the necessary tools here: various articles and reviews, videos, reviews of books, CDs and DVDs, tips to make the right choice when looking for a necessary sales tool. Some of the items described and reviewed can be bought right here in the specialized online store as well.

But all of these sounds more like intentions instead of the reality – the portal still has a pretty limited number of materials. The Encyclopedia and Store are quite full. But the latter section simply imports items from Amazon. While the rest of the sections are only waiting to be filled. But it is fair to say that the portal has only been launched very recently. And anyway, we are in Web 2.0: users are supposed to create content while developers provide them with tools to do it.

But still if the authors of Salesopedia hope that the portal will be filled with plenty of materials, they need to pay more attention to usability. Current layout and navigation of the site already give rise to unfavorable criticism. For example, the items in the Store are not grouped into any categories, so the user either needs to perform searches or browse through all the items. And it is evident that the criticism will only build up with the content accumulating.

So I can make a conclusion that despite of their good intentions the developers are somewhat too early with their slogan - The World of Sales from A to Z. Actually an honest ‘beta’ would sound better right now near the logo.
