PixSence: One More Step Forward

Svetlana Gladkova,

Mobile content tools are growing more and more popular daily. By daily I mean that news in this field arrive actually daily. Today I am talking about PixSense – video and photo content hosting solution that has secured $5.4 million in equity funding, led by ATA Ventures and Innovacom.

PixSense service was launched in March, 2005 and is intended to upload and store photos, videos and text files directly from cell phones. The recently announced funding is intended for development of new tools, enhancement of the existing ones and increasing partnerships with mobile carriers worldwide.

Currently about 95% of all the photos and videos captured with camera phones remain in the phones until eventually they get deleted. And this is especially true for those subscribers who do not have a PC. And even for PC-equipped users the procedure required to share their content is quite complicated: you have to connect your handset to your computer, copy the photo or video, upload it to the website where you want it to be shared (or send it to your friends by email). Of course, MMS is an option. But definitely I can not say any of the variants is particularly user-friendly.

Yesterday we described Moblr – the service intended to facilitate the above procedure for cell phones owners. PixSense operates within the same field. But unlike Moblr, PixSense provides a user with only 100 Mb of disk space (sure, that is not much, but the developers promise to increase the quota eventually). So users are able to upload their content to PixSense server using software installed onto the supported phones. Currently it is only possible to manage your uploaded content when you are on the website but the developers promise to add management of photos and videos directly from the mobile phones as soon as next year. One more feature to be added will be management of music files and blogging directly from your phone.

Management of a user’s account

Sure the secured funding must help the company to further develop PixSense, realize the announced plans and develop a really unique and incredibly sought-for solution. It is absolutely true that currently PixSense does not provide its users with anything unique. A similar service is offered by Flickr. And it has gained much more impressive results by now, has not it?

  • I think you should also check the new CellAdmin Mobile CMS. This is a web-based content management system that allows sound, animations, wallpapers, games, and video to be delivered to users’ cellular handsets either by broadcast or request from an incoming text message.
