RateThisTune/Site

Phil Butler,

A new independent music ratings web site was just launched called RateThisTune.com. Friday’s press release via PRWeb, touts the site as essentially “industry changing”. I admit the new site is different and interesting, but it is not that interesting! This new site allows new musicians to upload their talent to be rated by site visitors, and allows some free downloads of favorite songs.

What makes the site different from other discovery sites (according to the release), is that visitors are encouraged to rate the songs/artists so that the artists can obtain a ranking. The rankings are both overall and across genres, and the artists with the best ratings are featured on the home page. Through visitor ratings, artists can gain popularity, and potentially establish a fan base.

Site visitors can browse the entire site in search of new or interesting music. Fans can also post comments or feedback to the bands, so that the artist can gain valuable feedback from the people who listen to their music. I found site navigation to be simple and quick. The rating aspect is a snap too, and the playback quality was good.

“We’re not just helping music fans find new music,” says Yoseph Kalman, founder of RateThisTune.com. “We’re helping recording artists find success.” Given the number of starving new recording artists out there, I expect the new site to do well. Some of the songs I listened to were quite good actually, and obviously the community of artists is not nearly as large or diverse as it could be.

The press release suggests that RateThisTune is better than the other similar sites out there. It is certainly different, but I had little difficulty finding a few as good or better. RateSumMusic.com is a similar site, and it has been around for some time now. This site seems to have all the functionality of RateThisTune, but in a little bit cleaner package. There are also hundreds of tunes to listen to, and voting for artists is an aspect there too.

Given the vast list of similar sites on the web, and the “semi-obvious” similarity in names, this new offering will probably not take the industry by storm. However, new artists are always looking for venues to debut their music, so this site may become popular like so many others. Personally, I hate it when people insult our intelligence by claiming that something is “new” or “innovative”, when the only obvious differences might be colors and buttons.

  • Accualy i’v seen this site . its not that new its been around for a short while and while i did some research at the time that i found ratethistune.com , the site you refer to ratesumemusic came out AFTER ratethistune.com . ratethistune.com was original and ratesumemusic copied the idea! i think this yoseph guy deserves some credit. i hope his site does well.

  • I appreciate your comments, as we all need to be on our toes when reporting startups. RateSumMusic.com was started November 19, 2003 by Sum Music Entertainment LLC. You can verify this information at: http://www.gobignetwork.com/company-research/Report.aspx. I think most of the posts in the forum at RateSum are older than RateThis! Like you, I hope RateThisTune does well, too. I just don’t like being sold old clothes at Ralph Lauren prices!
