A Blessing for a Blogger – News from Nokia

Svetlana Gladkova,

It is well known that blogging is a very absorbing activity. A typical blogger is thinking about sharing his opinion on almost anything at any given moment. Besides, it is absolutely vital to get to know what others think on the subject. So Nokia is the next big guy willing to meet bloggers’ demands with release of their new devices announced at SEC 2007 yesterday: Nokia N93i - a phone designed especially for bloggers and Nokia N800 – Internet Tablet for web surfers.

N93i phone is actually an upgraded version of Nokia N93 – but more elegant and somewhat smaller and slimmer. The new device is really video-focused: it is equipped with 3.2 megapixel camera and a swivel head for viewing and shooting. So the new phone enables a user to record DVD-like quality video in MPEG-4 VGA format.

You wonder why the phone is called a ‘blogging device’ by Nokia? The thing is that Nokia has agreed with Six Apart to enable the device users to upload their audios and videos to Vox blogging service.

What differs the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet from other similar devices is that it is Linux-based (instead of the usual Symbian). Same as Nokia 770 the new device is equipped with a high-resolution widescreen display and full-screen finger keyboard . It supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to enhance the whole Internet experience for its users everywhere – at home or on the go. And of course there are some ‘minor’ advantages like integrated webcamera for Internet calling, an additional slot for memory cards and high quality stereo speakers. Besides, Nokia and Skype are going to jointly work on software intended to enable the N800 to make and receive calls over the Skype VOIP service.

But still I think that the two devices described are better together than apart. Whatever manufacturers do web surfing via a mobile phone is still not handy enough. So an Internet tablet is what makes your mobile web experience much more close to perfect.

I was really disappointed when I got my last Nokia phone and found out that:

    - LifeBlog software only supported Typepad
    - Symbian OS was too slow
    - Interface required 6-9 clicks to do ANYTHING
    - There was no way to use Internet other than with a data plan (no wifi, no USB to internet connection)

Engtech: Actually, I have never had a Nokia phone myself so I am not an expert, of course. But do you think that after the previous disappointment you will be willing to try the novelty announced? Do you think there’s any chance they improved the interface?
