Stumble TV For The Wii

Paul Glazowski,

First there was StumbleUpon. Then came StumbleVideo. And um…that?s about all we?ve got so far. But they?re both enough to occupy countless hours of your time. Spend a few minutes rummaging through the pages Stumbleupon delivers you and you?ll be hooked. The same goes for StumbleVideo, or as it is more widely regarded: Stumble TV.

Stumble TV pulls clips out of the annals of YouTube, Google Video (Both are now one and the same, really) and MySpace video ? whatever that is. Through the randomization process, you get to discover new videos, and you get to vote them up or down. The site is extraordinarily fun if you hate navigating through YouTube and all the other odd sites for great clips. You?re not guaranteed to like everything on Stumble TV - that?s what the ?thumbs down? button is for ? but you?re bound to find cool and interesting surprises along the way. Plus, you?re given a much more attractive viewing window and a simple interface, so at least you?ve got something great to view content within.

The reason Stumble TV is making news yet again (it was launched back in 2006) is because of the announcement that the site is now Wii compatible. Yes, that?s right. Millions of Wiis, Millions of YouTube viewers. Put the two together and you?ve got the potential to make Stumble TV exponentially more popular. Not that it isn?t already.

StumbleUpon is definitely the king of the Stumble clan. The idea to vote sites up or down came from ? Alright, it could?ve been inspired by lots of things. But word on the street is that Pandora sparked the first neurons? interest in the idea of what would eventually become StumbleUpon. After months of viral success, the creators thought it would only be natural to bring multimedia into the mix, except they didn?t bring it into the mix. They kept it separate. They were smart to do so. StumbleUpon could?ve very quickly become a disorienting mess and an eventual failure. They wanted to allow Stumble Upon and Stumble TV to go their own separate paths to grow without snagging each others? lines.

Now that Stumble TV has gone from a desktop browser-only existence to a Wii-based Opera browser format as well, we think the site will do even better. Some folks interested in trying it out who previously shunned YouTube from their lives may embrace the new format because of the attractive interface and the random selection of video. Also, people seem to like voting a lot, at least from the comfort of their couches, so we can see Wii fans clicking away at those thumbs (Wow, that?s a confusing line, ain?t it?) on the screen. There is such a thing as too much, but with only a million or so consoles sold, we won?t get to that point for quite a while.

You can browse all types of videos, regardless of genre, or you can whittle the selection down to a specific category. If you?d like, you can even watch stuff enjoyed by other stumblers. Keep an eye on the clock, though. You can get carried away pretty easily, and when you?ve got a site as great as this coupled with a celebrated console like the Wii, well… just be careful.
