‘Prom Queen’ To Debut April 1st
March 31, 2007 |
80 episodes in 120 minutes. That’s what Michael Eisner, former CEO of Disney, has signed for as his first serial Web video enterprise, to be shown exclusively on MySpace, starting Sunday, April 1st.
A story documented in many brief moments has been done before. Heard the tales told by LonelyGirl15? The only difference between the world’s most popular Web cam diary and this new Internet drama, called “Prom Queen,” is that MySpace will be hosting, and production will be a little more…professional. But not much more, we hope. We can’t have stuff good enough for television showing up as Web-only treats now, can we?
Actually, from the look of the preview, it appears that the budget for "Prom Queen" allowed for some quality cameras, so you can count on drama to be the overarching theme during the first (and maybe only) season.
(Still wondering why Michael Eisner’s involved? “Prom Queen” is the first venture by Vuguru, a studio started by Mr. Eisner and his investment firm. And that’s pretty much all we know.)
The premise of “Prom Queen” is under wraps, but there might be some slashed evening dresses and a morsel of fake blood in some episodes. Our guess is that you’ll need to look elsewhere for intellectual matter, but hey, if you’re on MySpace you’re not— You know what? We won’t go there.
With membership on MySpace in the tens of millions, “Prom Queen" is bound to be a hit. It has no need for word of mouth; it’ll have a place on the front page of MySpace for some time, where many, many hits are guaranteed. And at 90 seconds per episode, it’s going to be consumed by a following larger than we all might think. Even if you say you want to have nothing to do with, you’re going to watch it. Why? Because a single episode is just 90 seconds.
There are many things each of us doesn’t bother with on the Web. For some it’s the salacious stuff that’s off limits. For others it's the innumerable number of blogs. But free 90-second snippets of professional quality video stuffed with content which remains very much in question? Heck yeah.
