EMI, Apple to Apple Deal: Fab Four on iTunes

Phil Butler

London record company EMI announced yesterday that it is planning to unveil an exciting digital collaboration with Apple Inc. The news, although not conclusive, points to an expectation that The Beatles' music catalogue will be made available to Apple's iTunes online music store.

EMI will hold a news conference today from their London headquarters with Eric Nicoli EMI's head honcho and Steve Jobs of Apple. The company would not give any further details, but EMI has been The Beatle's record label since the early 1960's, so really no other prospective announcement could be expected.

The Beatles have been the biggest "holdout" on Apple iTunes and other online music entities according to news from Yahoo!. Apple Corps and Apple have resolved their ongoing dispute over the apple logo, so it looks like the road is paved for this big collaboration. Apple Corps was formed by The Beatles back in '68, and Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon's widow, and the estate of George Harrison still own the super popular apple logo and label.

Many will not remember it, but the Apple record label featured a big green apple on their vinyl records, which we all thought was pretty cool back then. Web 2.0 music lovers will benefit greatly from this deal, as a huge chunk of classic music will find its way onto iPods worldwide.

Apple seems to be hammering one home run after another since the beginning of the year. The addition of exclusive rights with EMI will be a real screamer headed out of the Web 2.0 ballpark!
