MySpace To Hold Mock Election Jan 1st & 2nd

What are you doing this January 1st and 2nd? Oh, attending a string of parties? Sweeping up confetti? Drinking the champagne left over from the 12:00am bash? (That doesn’t make any sense. Who ever has leftover champagne?) Well, if you happen to be free of a hangover (Headaches and politics don’t go togeth— Actually, they kind of do mix.) hours after the proverbial ball has dropped and have some precious moments to spare for the politicians cool enough to be with the trendiest of Web 2.0, you can partake in MySpace’s first mock presidential election. How ‘bout it? There’ll be plenty of fraudulent ballots cast. Come on, you know you wanna….
Yes, it’s true. A mock presidential election will be had at the start of 2008, and it will be a spirited portrayal of what the social network’s constituency want from the candidates this [far too stretched] election season. Or at least what MySpace’s masses think of the hopefuls who remain in the race through January.
In a statement about the event, MySpace’s President, Tom Anderson, said, “Iowa and New Hampshire may be selecting delegates, but the MySpace vote will be the first test of where candidates stand in the election year.” Mr Anderson surely wouldn’t downplay the event, as he’s paid to say good things about the company, the site, and what site and company orchestrate throughout the year. But somebody has to play the curmudgeon, and I say the folks who thought this up are mad!
No, actually it’s fine. A mock presidential election sounds like something the MySpace generation could have fun with. The site is even preparing well in advance of the vote. It has now an Impact channel where the noise over what will be seen and heard in 2008 can be thrown about the site’s political spectrum in 2007.
At the Impact page there will be virtual polls taken ahead of the virtual primary, and by January we’ll know where the millions of MySpacers stand on the issues. Of course, the race for the presidency will still be active in the real world after the virtual booths get dismantled after their close on January 2nd. But at least MySpace will have the satisfaction of arranging the first big political event of the election year.
No word yet on whether Hillary, both Johnnys, Barry, Rudy, Joey, Mitt, Bill, Tommy, Dennis, Ron, Duncan, and/or Chris will show their faces when the final hours of the MySpace election are upon the country. Chances are at least one will chime in about it before New Year’s Day. What are the odds that Mitt Romney ventures forth to sit in the eye of a web cam?
