Beta Push Startup Reviews

Phil Butler,

As Web 2.0 bloggers we are constantly reviewing startups for our readers. A new site called Beta Push is either trying to help us or kill us, I am not sure which. Beta push was created to allow developers and users to publish articles about their products. The site is a free sign up and also allows members to earn revenue from their Google Adsense accounts via their submitted articles.

Beta Push has an easy to use UI and a simple system for submitting and writing short reviews of startups in various categories. Like most new sites Beta Push is not overloaded with users yet, so content and submissions are not overwhelmingly abundant either. The addition of simple monetization for BP submitters will be attractive to Adsense account holders. The submission, comment and review aspects of this site are ideal for small startups and reviewers who are quick on their feet.

The "push" system is a simple voting utility that allows users to push their favorites to the forefront of the Beta Push pages and ratings. Categories are not limited to any one type of Beta and include: Shareware, Commercial Software, Open Source Scripts, Social Networks, Web Applications, Beta Sites, Gadgets, OS, Firefox Extensions, OSS and Freeware.

With some work Beta Push could be a top notch startup information and news site. At the moment there are not a great number of listings or users, but some of the sites and products "Pushed" are interesting and would be relatively obscure to the big blog machines. The key for Beta Push, as it is for all such sites, will be the way the system catches on. A large number of informed users would transform this simple utility into a valuable tool for news and community.

Sometimes simplicity makes a site easier to take advantage of, and Beta Push is the perfect platform for the ambitious Adsense person. I don't expect Beta Push to be putting prominent tech blogs out of business, but it is a great place for site developers to get some feedback and PR. Like so many more, BP just needs the community to take it to the next level.

  • BetaPush is no threat to Web 2.0 bloggers at all! KillerStartups.com is though! :-)

  • Ive seen this make the rounds through StumbleUpon. Im sure they are paying to be there (the ads actually work pretty good for some clients). The few times I have seen the site there was nothing remotely interesting. I was curious and checked out the whois info and it is a VERY new site, only been around 2 weeks.

I wouldn’t worry about this one.

  • dude, it’s japs - (just another pligg site) - no threat at all, and it’s clunky, and breaks in safari…

however, i do agree with nikolay- killerstartups is outstanding! these guys are taking the time to really look at each company and provide some insight, notes, ratings, feedback and so on…

my only gripe: what’s worth covering? i mean, for example, betapush is just some dude who threw up a pligg.com install and customized the header…and you’re covering it? techcrunch does this sometimes too…

perhaps there should be some guidelines like certain number of users or novelty in technology before coverage begins? just an idea…

  • btw, sorry - realize that japs may offend (even i, a member of the tribe, take slight offense) so lets make it “YAPS - Yet Another Pligg Site” ;)

  • Hey, you have to report new startups, I mean look at Digg. One million people making a big deal out of mutual self gratification. I did not say BetaPush was anything but Betapush did I?

BTW, it is 5:05 CST here and I will leave the disparaging comments about other people (ethnicity) up for exactly 24 hours, just so you know I am fair and impartial “dude”.

I was kidding about the threat too guys, come on read at least 300 words. A good reader could do that in about 60 seconds. LOL

  • Let me show my support of Phil’s opinion: we have to review new startups. If we all wait until it actually gets popular, do you think a startup ever will without any initial coverage? We simply try to tell if it has any potential at all, it is people who make community websites interesting eventually.

  • Thanks for the kind review Phil. From the initial review and the last comment you made I can’t tell if it was just a joke on me. I havn’t put much time into it and yes it is a “YAP” as someone called it. I originally was just trying out the system and didn’t really like the design so I went in and changed it abit. I am interested in building a custom site but I’m sure some of you will know the dedication and workload that it requires. I made it to be Adsense revenue sharing to “tip” the users in way for being part of the very tiny community it is. I have noticed a few new users popping up which is nice and I hope that some posts may contribute to the success of a new killer beta.

I didn’t start the project with the idea to compete with or threaten other “Digg” style sites, I just wanted to have one of my own and see where it goes. KillerStartups.com is a great site and I imagine it will go far. Tremendous work seems to have gone into the development of it and the creator truly deserves to be praised for his work and efforts.

    RE: Svetlana,

Thank you and you really have nailed the it to the point that a lot of ppl seemed to miss. This type of site is all about the users, thats where everything is going and really always has been but in a different perspective of it. It is the community that makes these types of sites interesting and it is the user posts that we read. With anything in like, without interaction, there is no action. Some sites can be compared to a square block that is really hard to get moving, yet others as a sphere which can start moving with the slightest vibration….I guess we’ll see if Beta Push is a sphere or a square. Either way, I hope that what I have created will help someone somewhere with something. :)
