Akimbo VOD Direct to PC/TV

Well, I was waiting for someone to hit the long ball and it looks like a company called Akimbo just smacked one into the parking lot. Yesterday Akimbo announced that they will release an Internet based video on demand service sometime next week.

The Beta release will support Windows XP and Vista based PC's and the RCA Akimbo player. Consumers of Akimbo services will be able to download Akimbo and access thousands of videos including full length movies, short subjects, documentaries, cartoon networks, animated and indie movies and a ton of sports programming.

Akimbo is a widely accepted via the RCA Akimbo Player set-top-box and through AT&T Homezone entertainment service. According to a press release via BusinessWire Akimbo will use the Sonic Solutions Roxio VenueTM, which is a media management application that makes the Akimbo service available on PC's without the use of the set-top-box. Users with broadband connections can now select, manage and progressively download programming to their PC.

According to Akimbo CEO Thomas F. Frank, "Making Akimbo available on the PC is an important step toward delivering our award winning Internet VOD service wherever consumers prefer to receive it." Akimbo boasts over 15,000 mainstream and specialty titles for Web TV users.

Akimbo is the first company to supply digital VOD to television via a broadband connection. Akimbo is an aggregator of brand name and specialty video and provides the world's largest collection of VOD programming. Akimbo is based in San Mateo, California and their company motto is, "Your wish is our demand."

Well, they answered my wish for today for sure. A trip to the Akimbo site will reveal just how refined and full of programming this service is. Internet TV just got a whole lot bigger and Web 2.0 will be "now playing" to even more Internet users.
