Web 2.0 Expo - Nexo’s Latest Features

Phil Butler,

Nexo.com asked us to revisit their site and review their latest features being showcased at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. Nexo was one of my early picks as "poster child" of early 2007 startups. Nexo combines simple website creation, group email, social networking and effective real time collaborative elements for a super user friendly service.

The free aspect of Nexo launched back in January with their most innovative showcased feature group collaboration ala Wiki. The latest addition is a premium service where businesses can upgrade for a cleaner presentation and additional storage.

The premium service at Nexo offers all the utility of the basic plan plus the ability to turn off advertising or increasing storage capacity by 5 GB. Pricing for the premium services are $14.95 and $9.95 per month respectively. I don't have as problem monetizing Nexo in this way, but my non-profit might want a little more bang for the buck.

Nexo is a clean and easy tool for group collaboration, which is why I thought it would be a successful startup in the first place. Nexo has tightened up many fuzzy areas of the site and tweaked a lot of the UI aspects. I am not following this latest revenue model though, as there are just way too many similar applications out there. I actually expected the Nexo folks to come up with something better than the competition.

Nexo is a great place to create nice spaces easily, but they need something to delineate Nexo from the herd of apps out there. Nexo is a very nice site that could be an exceptional one. I know they can do much better and probably will.
