Me.dium Makes the Finals of Webware’s Top 100

Phil Butler,

Me.dium has just been selected as one of the finalists for the CNET Webware TOP 100 Awards, and Profy could not be happier for them. Me.dium is situated in the Community category with several other excellent finalists to be voted on by YOU from May 23rd through June 11th at the Webware site.

Me.dium, as most of you know, is one of the most innovative startups of this year and we have probably covered their progress as extensively as anyone. The folks at Me.dium are some of my favorites and their service is absolutely deserving of recognition.

Webware announced the kick-off of the awards back in April in an effort to make some sense (literally) of the onslaught of Web 2.0 sites. The contest has 10 categories where nominees have been selected.

Those categories are:

Browsing - Web browsers, extensions, widgets and security

Communications - E-mail, chat, VOIP

Community - Social networks and groups

Data - Search, storage, backup, sharing, and sync

Entertainment - Games and contests

Media - Audio, video, photo

Mobile - Portable utilities and apps

Productivity - Apps, business tools, commerce, online stores

Publishing - Blogging, Web content, design tools

Reference - Mapping, reference works, blogs, content sites, and education

All together there are 250 finalists across the 10 category listing. I must say that Me.dium's category is chock full of excellent nominees including: Bebo, Del.icio.us, Facebook, Digg (ugh), MyBlogLog, Reddit, Tangler, MySpace (ugh), LinkedIn, Netscape and other great sites. To vote in this tough category please go here, and may the best site win!

I am going to have to think about this one long and hard as many of these CEO's and companies have been great to me and Profy. In the final analysis I guess we have to make the tough decision based on who actually has the greatest innovation and service. I will leave all my readers to their own devices on this one. Personally, I utilize 18 of these 25 finalists in this category. I bet our readers are in the same boat too, so it should be interesting to see the numbers. I hope everyone is as objective as I am though, because just numbers and popularity do not always indicate excellence just as Walmart is not a place you would want to buy a wedding dress.

Medium vs. Tangler

My Me.dium pals sent me a special link so that Profy readers who have not experienced their service can now sign up. If you have not had the opportunity to check out this fantastic resource use this link to sign up now. I see another one of my favorites there in the list but my good friend Marty Wells, CEO of Tangler did not tell me he was nominated even. Shame on you Marty, I should vote for Me.dium just on principal!

The Winners

The top 10 winners in each of the 10 categories will be featured on Webware.com, CNET.com, CNET TV and other CNET properties worldwide. CNET is one of the "go to" places for companies wanting their brands out there, so this is a great opportunity for all our friends across Web 2.0. We wish them all the best and applaud their great efforts toward making Web 2.0 the sensation it is. The screen below illustrates two of my favorites.

  • With 25 candidates in each of 10 categories making choice is really hard (at least it was hard for me since I use about one third of products in each category myself).
My two special favorites in the browsing category are Yourminis and StumbleUpon – I could hardly make my choice. I voted for Box.net in the Data category but I can hardly imagine how they all will compete with Google :)
I have also voted for Fotki in the Media category though I’ve been using Flickr more recently. But I do hope it is only natural to support a project founded by a Russian entrepreneur.
But anyway taking a look at all the candidate products and making your own choice is an interesting challenge, I actually enjoyed it and I wish more people will vote so that we could really have the opinion of Web 2.0 crowd about on products are considered to be the best.

  • I told you Phil, but it might have slipped off the radar…

I thought you were comparing Medium and Tangler as services. But then I realised it’s just your love that you are sharing and must choose between two.

My suggestion - vote for one in firefox and one in IE… ;-) Just kidding of course.

To the Me.dium crew - come and create a group in Tangler. We promise lots of juicy feedback. http://web20.tangler.com/

    Cheers,

    Mick from Tangler

  • Mick, you are correct in your evaluation, and it is very hard and a tad unfair to compare Tangler and Me.dium. I know that the guys at Me.dium are big fans of your as we spoke of that just the other day. In my estimation Tangler is a community, while Me.dium is more of a tool in my estimation. A very innovative and useful tool but none the less in a different category.

I really think Me.dium should have won in the Browsing category, but as it stands both you guys are up against the ubiquitous teen mutual gratification societies at MySpace and Digg. I am just glad you both got some recognition for the great work you have given to us all. I too am waiting on the IE compatible Me.dium version as I am a die hard old IE fart. So, get with it Me.dium! :)

  • Thanks Phil.

Your support for us at Me.dium has been phenomenal.

@Mick: good to meet you, and I just set up a Me.dium group on Tangler. Looking forward to playing with it.

    Thanks again Phil.

    Kimbal from Me.dium

  • Don't mention it Kimbal, you guys have done some amazing work. All I ever really do is relate what developers do and you guys have gone out of your way to help me do that. Thank you and all the really excellent people who make our writing and reporting really fun.You know if you guys would take my advice and splice Tangler and Me.dium together those two Web shaking innovations would make one heck of a collaboration. :)

  • Hey Kimbal, thanks for the faith.

Is the group private or public? Throw me an invite in Tangler. Username is mick

I’m jumping into Me.dium now and I’ll do a screencast and put it on Tangler.

    :-)

    Mick
