Yahoo! Photos To See Its Curtain Close In September
by
on June 14, 2007,
Early last month we brought you news that Yahoo! had decided to put its Photos site to rest. Well, the company?s still going ahead with the plan, only we now know when it?s going to hit the hay for good.
98 days from today. September 20th, 2007. That?s when it?s to be put away, never to return. Well, never say never, but…yeah, never. Au revoir, Yahoo! Photos. We won?t miss you in the least.
Yahoo! clearly wants to make Flickr its one-and-only when it comes to having their users store and share photos. Why wouldn?t they? It?s vastly superior, it?s got longevity written all over it, and it?s the most popular service of its kind on the Web today. Well, second most popular, to be technical about it. The real #1 is actually, well, oddly enough, Yahoo! Photos.
Yes, it?s true. We mentioned that bit in our first piece on the forced retirement of Yahoo! Photos, and we feel strange every time we disclose that bit. Sure, it?s understandable to see Yahoo! Photos on top, particularly as it?s been around for years and years. If Flickr and its competitors had such extensive histories, they?d likely amass similar numbers. But alas, we are where we are. Let?s just consider ourselves fortunate that Yahoo! Photos will be with us no longer in just a few short months.
It?s good of Yahoo! to give is members such a significant stretch of time to transition away from the dated service. The window?s large enough to bring the news of the site?s closing to great swath of people ? it?s pretty much impossible to reach everyone ? but not so much as to make it unnecessarily protracted. It won?t meet a slow, painful end. It?ll be appropriately concise.
Wow, way to fluff this announcement up, eh? Could?ve done it in a single, brief sentence. 300 words (and counting) with little if any substance to show. Ah well, it is what it is. You may demand the last dozen or so seconds of your life back, but it?s highly unlikely that they?ll be returned.
To sum up: Yahoo! Photos. It?s closing. If you use it. Stop. Move out. You?ve got 98 days. Apologies for the wasted time.
