Videojug Instructional Showcase

Phil Butler,

Are you ready for another video site? I am not sure how ready I was, but I ran across a fairly new site called Videojug that I thought you might be interested in. The premise behind this site is explained in their slogan "Life explained on film" as the site has a great selection of instructional clips on everything from golf swings to animal husbandry. Videojug is still in beta and they claim to be one of the world's largest libraries of "factual" content.

The content on Videojug is divided into a variety of categories which makes finding instruction or information simpler and users can also submit text queries for particular questions.

Like many of the sites we have visited this one has its fair share of worthless video, but a good deal of their content could be helpful and informative. Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of Videojug is the absence of goofy or hyped video that has been supplanted by sometimes lame but mostly practical content.

Here are some of the essentials on Videojug:

  • Ask an expert - Video productions in conjunction with leading experts or authorities
  • How To - Produced and user submitted video instructional on problem solving
  • Just for Fun - Informative and often funny video on everything from magic to dancing
  • Ask a Question - An interface that renders relevant video for specific queries
  • Answer a Question - Allows users to answer questions from their peers

The Take

Some of the video on this site was obviously designated for absolute morons or the geek who never leaves his/her room. In one instance an English lady tries to explain how to get along with your mother-in-law. Anyone who has a mother-in-law will get a hoot from this one as anyone knows your mother-in-law gets along with you, not the reverse.

The interface and the look of the site are very good, and as I said before there are a great many helpful videos on a wide range of subjects. Of all the similar sites Videojug has so far exceeded the quality and quantity of what I would call semi-instructional content. Sites like this and 5min.com seem to partially fill a niche for instructional video along with a few others. Personally, I would like to see the venue fulfilled with a killer application of some merit.
