Leslie Poston

Here at Profy we get thousands of news items and web 2.0 application announcements and updates a day across our desks, and sometimes it takes something unique or exciting to catch our attention. Virtual cadavers on Halloween definitely fit that bill.  It seems that universities across the United States are taking advantage of technological advances to give their students a complete medical experience in a virtual format.
A company called A.D.A.M . has created interactive software that is now required for [...]

Net Neutrality, Brought To Light Once More

Paul Glazowski

When you hear or read the term “Net neutrality,” what do you think? “Yes, please?” “We still talking about that stuff?” Perhaps you don’t really care one way or another.
Whatever your opinion on the subject might be, the fact of the matter is that we’ve got a ways to go before it’s a dead one. With members of the US Senate Commerce Committee now looking into cases involving ISPs and charges against them having to do with inaccurate (and maybe [...]

Hakia Unleashes “MO” - Meet Others Via Search

Phil Butler

Hakia is rolling out yet another aspect of their semantic search technology today. MO (or meet others) exhibits another interesting aspect of “search” by allowing people to meet other people entertaining the same queries. By adding this P2P social element to search, hakia is effectively spreading semantics (or meaning) across a much wider spectrum and toward true answers and understanding. Users simply click on the MO icon after making a query and they are taken into rooms where people have [...]

Google’s finally let the cat out of the bag.
The company announced yesterday its intentions to create a project, dubbed OpenSocial (corresponding webpage is not active yet; Nov 1 is lauch day), very basically described to be a set of APIs, that will allow multiple platforms on the Web to play by a “universally” accepted common set of laws that will enable developers the option to “create applications that work on any social networks…that choose to participate.”
The reasoning for the [...]

NIN’s Trent Reznor Claims To Have Account At Torrent Site OiNK

Paul Glazowski

By now you’ve probably gotten a bit familiar already with OiNK, a peer-to-peer venue that recently had itself publicly manhandled and forced offline by both Dutch and English authorities last week. And you’ve likely received word that The Pirate Bay promised to “re-launch” the operation, albeit with a ‘B’ added to its title (so “BOiNK” will be its new name; cheeky, eh?).
Well, today you’re going to get another little factoid to add to your daily dose of nifty news to [...]

Allan Herman

Yaari is Hindi for friendship and Prerna Gupta, founder and CEO of Yaari.com and co-founder Parag Chordia, are playing heavily on that key word to create a social network for the Indian youth. Their goal is to go head-to-head with Google?s Orkut for the Indian market.
In an interview with Kiruba Shankar at PodTech India, Ms. Gupta born, raised and still living in the USA had this to say, ?Well, I first came up with the idea in June of [...]

Paul Glazowski

Earlier this year – in spring, or Q2, to be more precise – the world witnessed the debut of MySpaceTV's first serial, called “Prom Queen,” which was broken into 90-second-episode snippets and ran for north of a month's time.
And just a week ago, the social network announced the launch of its second episodic production, “Roommates,” an ongoing, scripted, viewer-influenced drama occurring over the course of 45 weekdays.
Now, MySpace has made known its intentions to go even further into the realm [...]

Disqus is a new comment/discussion startup debuting today, and quite frankly it is very promising. This logical - enhanced online discussion tool allows blogs, websites and visitors to benefit from comments and relevant discussions in several ways. Disqus allows site owners to create custom discussion forums interfaced with a comments aspect for blogs and websites. The service can be utilized as a stand alone forum or as a companion to the comments tools. Disqus founder Daniel Ha told me that [...]
