Dynamic Trend Prediction Engine

Leslie Poston,

ZiiTrend LogoZiiTrend is taking Web 2.0 in a new direction by attempting to harness it to make social predictions. It's a pretty neat concept, actually. Anyone can join and set up a short profile with an avatar. Once you've set up your profile you can start browsing predictions or making predictions right away.

Once a prediction in made, the community can see it and toss in their two cents about it.  You can click on the prediction itself to get to the action page.  On the action page you have the opportunity to give the prediction "Ziibos" (rank it) by clicking the I Predict button and making your own prediction about the prediction.

You also have a chance to comment, to see the profiles of other users who have ranked the prediction or commented, to see similar predictions, related news, share the prediction on social news sites like Digg and more. As you use the community and make friends, ZiiTrend learns your preferences and theirs, showing the predictions it thinks will matter most to you.

Each prediction is also rated according to its chance of coming true, and given a deadline.  Next to each prediction is the percentage chance it has of coming true. As far as I can tell, the percentage is based on the Ziibos the prediction receives.  Making accurate predictions enhances your ranking in the ZiiTrend community and gives your predictions more weight.

As you go deeper into ZiiTrend, you begin to see graphs of the possible "future", related news and predictions, user ratings and more operating in tandem.  It's quite fascinating, actually.  Is it useful? I'm not sure, but it certainly is an excellent time sink and a fun way to be more involved with the news online.  I'll probably hang out on ZiiTrend as much as, if not more than, sites like Digg from now on.
