Nokia Expands On Its List Of Mobile Media Providers

Paul Glazowski,

Nokia, in an attempt to make itself well-established presence in mobile world steadily increasing in on-the-go entertainment options and provisions as far as choice of content is concerned, has announced the addition of CNN and Sony Pictures to its list of media partners.

Both join the big name providers YouTube and Reuters as contracted suppliers of videos to the mobile phone company’s list of media-friendly devices, known as the N Series line.

As the terms mobile and media become increasingly synonymous as the world technology progresses, content partnerships both big and small will decide which companies get ahead, which get way ahead, and which companies simply don’t budge at all. Nokia, with global news providers like Reuters and CNN, has ensured itself a bright future as far as up-to-date news coverage is concerned, and with a partnership with YouTube in its arsenal, as well as Sony Pictures, the path the company ventures on promises to be a solid one well into the future.

While Nokia’s first-announced video content suppliers, YouTube and Reuters, are presumably more “critical” to the success of the Finnish company’s mobile multimedia plans – the suppliers’ plans as well, considering Nokia’s strong dominance in the mobile market worldwide – the addition of both CNN and Sony to the roster only strengthens its hand. If nothing else, consumer choice will grow, and with other players in the mobile industry sensing a real need to compete at present, competition is slated to expand across hardware, software, and media industries fairly quickly, whereas until this point things in the mobile realm have been relatively slow-going and uneventful.

It’ll be interesting to see how other media houses, mobile phone manufacturers, and software developers will act in the coming months. The demand for more media in more places needs to be met with action. Nokia and its collaborators clearly see that need. How quickly Motorola and the rest present their intentions will show whether Nokia will retain its lead or whether we’ll see a big shift come 2008.
