Microsoft Launches Free Directory Service With Live Search 411

Microsoft appears to be taking a cue from Google by unveiling its very own free directory service called Live Search 411.
Back in March, the software giant acquired TellMe Networks, which had already been offering a directory service. In fact the TellMe service appears to still be active and separate from the new Microsoft offering, with a different number for each (The number remains 1-800-555-TELL for TellMe).
By dialing 1-800-Call-411, anyone can use Live Search 411 to find and reach people, businesses, and various other information from anywhere. With Google already having a six-month head start and heavy traditional advertising on billboards, why is Microsoft wasting its time with this quietly launched service?
Just as 1-800-GOOG-411 offers, users of Live Search 411 will have access to local directories, which only require the user to say 3 things: City, State, and Category (or business name). Similarly, results can also then be sent via text message to a mobile phone complete with a link to a map of the area. Mysteriously missing though are driving directions to the location, which should at least be an option for users.
The main differences between Live Search 411 and GOOG 411 seem to be in the details. Live Search 411 offers more user inputs (such as the ability to search by city district) which can further refine results, while Google has aimed to keep things simple. Microsoft also made sure to throw some extras into Live Search 411, including movie theater times, traffic information, and weather forecasts.
Other free directory services available include 1-800-FREE411 from Jingle Networks and 800-Yellowpages from AT&T. This sector of the market is rapidly becoming crowded and it will be very interesting to see who comes out on top. Unless plans are developed to start generating revenue from these services, I do not see all of them surviving.
