Third-Party Devs Create Social Games For Meebo Platform

Paul Glazowski,

It’s getting to be a relatively quiet week in the tech world. Sure, servers are serving and screens are…you know…screening, but a good portion of the newsmakers and newsbreakers are taking a bit of a rest, a siesta if you will. Why? Well, here in the US in particular, we’re coming up on a national holiday, and while Americans typically take most every chance they get to practice their overtime-honored workaholicism, we also know how to abide by our calendars and take breaks where breaks are “required”.

So it’s with a bit of cheeriness and festivity that we bring you word of a fun little Meebo development that surfaced recently. (Or would “developments” be the politically correct term to use?)

The release, a package of some twenty games ranging from checkers to chess to very popular playing card amusement known as Texas Hold ‘em, is a nifty selection of entertaining distractions, and because they are all connected to the Meebo platform, they carry with them that cool social element everyone harps on about these days. So if you’ve got a computer on hand, and a buddy of yours does as well, you’ll be able to spar via the online chat application, no matter where the two of you may situate yourselves. Play side by side (literally), or play continents apart. As long as you’ve both got fairly solid connections to the Net, you’ll have something – and someone – to cut back your boredom with.

Now, I will certainly admit, this practice of mating instant messaging with gaming is hardly new. There’s no disputing that.meebogame Regardless of how recent Meebo’s API release might be, people have been playing simple computer games via various chat utilities for many, many years.

Yet here you are. Right now. Looking for something to do. Perhaps by habit, you’ve sign on to your instant messaging account. Perhaps you’ve done so using Meebo. And you’ve found someone you enjoy conversing with. So you’re happy to talk. But you want something more. Something to keep you occupied whilst punching out one-liners and gossip and poetic verse and whatnot. And, oh, you find that there are some games to play, and, hey, how convenient it is that your buddy’s using Meebo as well. And so the boredom quickly melts away.

At least temporarily. Fun don’t last forever, after all. There’ll come a time that annoying interruptions will come about. Like school, or work. Or hunger. But you’ll be okay with that, because you’ll have had some fun, courtesy of some third-party developer(s), and a simply little Web-based invention by the name of Meebo.

Enjoy!

Note to all in the Profy readership not celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday: You too can play Meebo games, only you might have to squeeze time for play out of your regular schedule. Which, we know, isn’t very fair. Sorry.
