Interesting post. A few months ago I wrote a post detailing ways to detect if someone is stealing your content from your WordPress blog, and then how to go about preventing that from happening, or stopping it. You can see the post here: 10 steps to a more splog-free WordPress blog.

First off, thank you for bringing this up and publishing so much useful information. There is a lot of great stuff in this piece and I definitely. agree with pretty much everything. However, I do have a few things to add.

First, Attributor is not open to the public yet, at least not to smaller publishers. They are in something of a closed beta right now, in case anyone goes to the site and can't find out where to register.

Second, as the commenter above mentioned, Copyscape is a great site for a quick check but so is Bitscan. Both do the same thing fundamentally but seem to pick up different sites, go figure.

Third, with WordPress plugins, Copyfeed is the swiss army knife of content protection plugins, providing the ability to not just do digital fingerprinting, but add copyright statements and even ban sites that misuse the feed. It is a must-have for anyone who is interested.

Finally, regarding the contacting the plagiarist, I'd like to note that there are no hard rules for fair use, just factors used to determine how likely the use is fair, and that fair use is only a defense.

Also, in that same area, it may be worth mentioning that you can file DMCA notices with the hosts of uncooperative plagiarists as well as with the search engines and, in some cases, ad networks.

I hope that helps out some, if you have any questions or need any help, feel free to drop me a line!

[...] Content stealing is one of my all time pet peeves, especially when one blog writer steals from another blog writer. Bloggers work so hard for their audience, whether it is for pay or for their own personal reasons. To see your content on a splog or copied in total on some other web site is a slap in the face and goes against writer solidarity. I got so incensed at the issue this weekend that I wrote a post on Profy helping you find ways to fight plagiarism online. Check it out here. If I missed a method, or you just want to tell your story of plagiarism, leave me a comment over there and let me know. If we help each other out, we may be better able to fight the content thieves.
Interesting. I've heard Jonathan Bailey of PlagarismToday.com mention something like this before. I might give this a shot just out of curiosity to see where my content is, other than on my own blog.
