Google Rolls Out Quote Finder

Leslie Poston,

google logoGoogle has announced the roll out of their new Quote Finder feature. This may not be huge news to everyone, but to someone who is always looking for the best quote for an article, this is a huge help. Being able to find the quote I need without having to work as hard at it will save me a lot of time as a writer.

How will this feature be used? It isn't a stand alone search engine like Froogle or Images, but rather an enhancement to their already comprehensive Google search. By typing in the name of a public figure, author or other person of interest, Google will return search results. Above the regular search results will be an area showing any quotes found my the person.

Clicking on the person's name will bring you to a page that showcases their quotes, as pictured here:

The feature also lists more details about the person and their available quotes in the sidebar. You can sort their available quotes by relevance or date, or do a search for another person's name to see opposing viewpoints on the issue you are researching or writing about.

This is a simple feature, but a much appreciated one from a research viewpoint. It also outlines why Google has the search clout that it does, in spite of recent accusations that they have left their "Don't be evil" motto in the dust. They are constantly working to improve their algorithm, offer more helpful features and stay relevant.

  • For anyone worth quoting (Churchill, Oscar Wilde, Shakespeare, Horace….) this seems pretty useless. If you could type in a quotation, and have any mistakes corrected, and the corrected quotation properly attributed, now that might be useful.

  • I have yet to need a quote from the true great thinkers in a tech article, though I suppose anything can happen. But I do frequently need quotes from CEOs, politicians and people from the tech world, which this is perfect for.
