@Steph I know that there were several that I didn't get to play with as much, including Phrasebase and Italki, so I may end up doing another article at some point in the future.

Toffler, thank you! I wish I had more free time. :)

I think the theory of the friend divide applies slightly differently on language learning networks than on other social networks. On Facebook, you add your friends and on LinkedIn, you add your business contacts; however, on language learning sites you add people who offer a complementary skill set. For example, if I want to learn Spanish, I don't get all my college friends to join, I add people who may be thousands of miles away that I've never met in person, but with whom I can still engage in real-time language exchange. Granted, to be successful on these sites, you still need a large enough user base speaking a variety of different languages so that everyone has someone they can connect with. Obviously the more popular languages like Spanish, Chinese, and English are easier. Still italki.com seems to has an active Polish-English language community, (http://www.italki.com/learn-Polish.htm) with more than 500 native Polish speakers. Besides that, you can also really enhance your Polish reading skills by using the site entirely in Polish. Cyndy, good luck in your refresher course.

This post is truly helpful. I speak Spanish, but would love to brush up since I now live in a part of the country where it isn't a prevalent as it was in California. I want to learn Russian and French as well, and I used to know some Japanese, but that's all gone now. I love languages, and who can afford Rosetta or Berlitz?
