Function Before Features and Fame

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

In case you are living in a cave this weekend, I'll tell you the "big new" in Web 2.0: Seesmic managed the coup of getting Steve Spielberg, George Lucas, and a good portion of the cast of the upcoming Indiana Jones movie to set up channels and respond to questions posed by The Guardian's Jemima Kiss. The one person you'd expect to be crowing about it would be Seesmic friend/investor/cheerleader Mike Arrington, but he's pretty ticked off about the whole [...]

PingMyCompany: Revenge Ratings Gone Wild

Leslie Poston

I have reviewed other Web 2.0 services here on Profy in which companies could be rated on various criteria. Most of these sites were to rate a company for how "green" they were. Today's site, PingMyCompany, let's you rate a company overall from an employee or potential employee's point of view.
At first glance the site seemed harmless enough. Everyone needs a place to vent their frustration, right? Wrong. Looking through the site there were as many vindictive or tangential rants [...]

Take the Red Pill: We Have No True Web 2.0

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

The other night, my husband asked me a question I had no answer for: when we've moved on to whatever Web 3.0 is going to be, what will be left of Web 2.0? There are carryovers from the 1.0 Bubble, but when you think about it, the Web itself is 1.0. And Tim Berners-Lee himself has argued that we can't delineate Web 2.0 since so much of the technology has existed since the beginning of the Web.
Everyone has tried to [...]

Bloggers Unite for Human Rights: Network Neutrality

Leslie Poston

Choosing a cause for Bloggers Unite was a daunting task this week. With earthquakes and cyclones wiping out vast portions of China and Myanmar, Darfur still in crisis and a world full of tragedies to choose from, in the end I chose an issue closer to home: network neutrality. Why? Because without the free internet we currently have under grandfathered network neutrality ideals, we would not be hearing about the other tragedies, nor would we be able to rally people [...]

Bloggers Unite for Human Rights: A Definition

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Before I finally go to sleep at night, I try to clear out my feeds as much as I possibly can just so that I'm not so overwhelmed when I wake up in the morning. I usually catch Steven Hodson's From the Pipeline feature in that last pass at night, and sometimes save links to read first thing in the morning.
Last night, however, as I was reading his links, I was really hoping to not want to come back to [...]

It’s Corporate Mash-Up Week! CBS to Acquire CNET

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I'm starting to think I may just want to skip right over the rest of 2008 and start fresh in 2009 when companies come to their senses. First HP decides to acquire support service dinosaur EDS, then Comcast snaps up Plaxo (all the better to throttle your bandwidth AND that of your social graph, my pretties!), and now CBS buys CNET.
I'm sure CNET is ecstatic about the news; several of their properties have been financially struggling now for what seems [...]

Giving Back Through Web 2.0: Twilight Wish

Leslie Poston

I had the pleasure of seeing social media working to give back to the community in person yesterday while attending an event with the Twilight Wish Foundation, based out of Pennsylvania. Twilight Wish is an organization that works to recognize the contributions and honor the dreams of the elderly, using the web to connect them to their wishes.
Twilight Wish Foundation was started from a simple lunch. The founder of Twilight Wish Foundation saw four elderly ladies struggling [...]

The Embargo Breaks: The Regurgitation of a Press Release

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I missed an embargo lifting this morning.
It's happened on occasion when life has overtaken my planned schedule for testing and writing, or we've missed an email due to the enormous amount of spam that often comes into the address for pitches, but I would much rather miss being "one of the first" to review a new product or service than put out an article that shows little to no effort.
What is disappointing to me is the number of blogs I [...]

Yedda, Down the Cyber Toilet!

Allan Herman

"Imagine you could connect with someone who knows the answers to your questions, on any topic, at any time." - presenting Yedda, a network of individuals providing answers to other member questions based on personal and professional expertise. Alternatively, as noted on Yedda’s home page, "Actively finding the best answers from the most relevant people. Just for you."
At first glimpse, I recalled such network and advice columns as Ask.com, Shell Busey’s referral network, Harry Dunbar’s North American Tile and [...]

What Problem Does It Solve?: Convincing Grandma She Needs a Feedreader

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Much has been made of the early adopters vs. middle America argument when it comes to much of Web 2.0 technology. And while everyone likes the "cool factor" of being part of the first tribe to have adopted a product or app, we all know that reality dictates more widespread adoption for a company to succeed.
There are some companies who have already managed to gain more widespread adoption. LinkedIn is one of them, and I know that because even my [...]
