Technologizer: Harry McCracken’s Next Trick
06/10/2008, 2 months 2 weeks ago
When Harry McCracken announced he was leaving PC World last month, I was a little curious, but not entirely surprised. Even as Editor-in-Chief, he seemed to be the most "with it" regarding new web technology, and PC World seems so inexorably tied to hardware that I actually quit reading them some time back, figuring any major news hits a gadget blog anyway.
This morning, his new project, promised in his farewell blog post, was announced. Technologizer will launch this summer (with no specific date given) in partnership with Federated Media. The new site promises to be "original news, reviews, analysis and community features for the general technology consumer from the novice PC user to the seasoned technology fanatic."
Federated has a number of tech blogs under its ad network umbrella, and, as TechCrunch noted back in March, Federated was hinting at taking a stake in the sites that they publish, and it looks like maybe they were right.
As for McCracken, though, I'd have to say I'm just a little bit disappointed. I was hoping for something really new, and not just another TechCrunch/Ars Technica sort of site. We have tons of gadget blogs and hardware blogs and web app blogs and blog networks that cover all of them, and it's getting increasingly hard to hear any unique sound in the echo chamber since it seems that too many sites are discussing the same 10 stories every day. I'll reserve judgment until I see the final product, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
