Microsoft and Yahoo On Again. Off Again. On Again. Wait, What?

Leslie Poston

I feel like the image that needs to go with this post is a stack of waffles judging by the amount of times we've written about the Microsoft and Yahoo on again / off again buyout affair.  It's made even more disappointing by how much I like Yahoo and how cringe-worthy its decisions throughout this whole mess have been.
I said recently that with the recent exodus of Yahoo staff, it had never been more ripe for the picking, [...]

Do People Seriously Use Google to Find Porn?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Europeans, who seem to find many of the American idiosyncrasies when it comes to issues about pornography downright antediluvian, can tune out right now unless they'd like a giggle, or to weigh in on how silly Americans can be about things like naked adults.
Here in the States, it's fairly amazing that adult films do such incredible business, considering that few people will admit to ever watching them. There is a booming business that's done under cover of online purchases, black-plastic-wrapped [...]

Balsamiq Rolls Out Mockups

Leslie Poston

Balsamiq Studios, LLC is a little start up with big ideas. They recently rolled out their first of several planned plug ins meant to make the web office a better place, called Mockups. I had the chance to speak with Balsamiq creator Giacomo "Peldi" Guilizzoni, and his big ideas for his start up impressed me, as well as his implementation plan.
That's right, Balsamiq is a company with a clear eye for how much they can accomplish, when they can [...]

The Fine Line of User-Generated Content Ethics: Russert Leak Fired

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Henry Blodget and Peter Kaftka are in an uproar. The person who changed Russert's Wikipedia entry was determined to be a lower-level employee at Internet Broadcasting Services, which is a company that provides web services to television stations. Apparently, the employee heard the reports, and felt it was his or her civic duty to update Wikipedia, assuming it was "common knowledge."
Kaftka and Blodget and a slew of other bloggers are all upset about the firing, claiming that unless the story [...]

Nokia Purchases Plazes for the Voyeuristically-Inclined

Triston McIntyre

Though I like the fact that Nokia took steps to acquire its own social platform called Plazes, I'm not a huge fan of companies trying to keep up with the Joneses. Those Joneses, in this case, would be Apple, which recently announced that a similar stalker-friendly tool called Loopt will be available for the iPhone at the debut of the Apps store.
The reason I call Loopt and Plazes tools for those with stalker tendencies is because both [...]

FaceBook Finally Overtakes MySpace Making Murdoch Hoppin’ Mad

Leslie Poston

When you pay $580 million for a company, it is completely normal to be upset when that company under performs. That is what is happening to Ruport Murdoch right now, as he watches recent acquisition MySpace falter under the onslaught of the Zuckerberg machine that is FaceBook.
What prompted the tantrum from the NewsCorp leader? FaceBook's 162% percent increase in market share over the course of a year. That's a substantial slice of the social networking pie. It represents about 127 [...]

Jibe Joins the Fray of Mobile Social Aggregators

Triston McIntyre

For me, any day is a good day when another developer pops up with a new mobile social platform. Today is such a day, as Jibe is moving from the alpha to the closed beta testing phase.
There have been wealth of new mobile social platforms making appearances as of late. My favorite variety have been mobile social aggregators. This is largely because I have my paws in far too many social applications, and any platform [...]

Google’s Android delayed; too late to compete with iPhone?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Android is delayed until sometime in the fourth quarter, and some cell phone manufacturers aren't even going to be able to get an Android phone out until 2009. The original Android announcement from last November suggested that phones would be out by the second half of this year. I suppose November 2008 is technically the second half, but a late T-Mobile launch is allegedly pushing back a Sprint-Nextel launch until 2009. China Mobile [...]

Twitzu: Good Idea, Missing Features and Upcoming or Google Calendar Integration

Leslie Poston

When I saw Twitzu flit across my radar as the newest shiny Twitter-based feature application, I was fairly excited. I use Twitter for many things, but event planning and event news is definitely at or near the top of my list. I couldn't wait to check it out.
After giving it the once over, I was a bit disappointed to see that Twitzu joins a long line of Twitter based services that are much more of a feature than a [...]

Flock 2.0: Nice Effort, but no Safari

Triston McIntyre

I don't use Firefox.  Say what you like about me personally, but I'm a dedicated Mac user.  I get what I need from Safari, and Camino makes for a nice alternative when necessary.  If I was using a PC, Firefox would be top dog, but thankfully, I am not.
With that said, Firefox 3 came out, and I wasn't about to throw a party.  I downloaded it and gave it a shot, but it didn't woo me.  However, when [...]
