With the shaky twitter infrastructure and constant problems, I can understand the frustration level that some experience with Twitter. Many people have much of their business running through twitter in one way or another and have to be prepared. Part of the preparation is to have a back up....isn't this responsible business? One should have a plan to continue moving forward with their business. Imagine if we ignored the constant whale and downtime and did nothing......... twitter goes down for an extended period.....No back up = ouch!! My two cents anyway. Great insight , nice post!

I am SO with you - when Twitter is down I just work around it rather than trying to set up shop somewhere else. All of this plurk and identi.ca stuff can flow around me, but I'm a heavy twitter user with a decent-size network - I'm not going anywhere til my timeline is empty. I've thought about it though, and really think that if Twitter would disappear, I might not bother with an alternative. I've gotten so close to twhirl and my twitter activity that nothing could replicate it and I know where to find my closest contacts if I need them.

When Twitter isn't all that it could be, I use Summize to collect my replies, that's about it. I check in to see what's working and what's not, but it's not the same without twhirl, so I don't post or reply quite as much these days. I'm seeing that things seem to be a bit better after the down time tonight, so I have hope yet!
