Firefox 2 Users Will Be Prompted to Upgrade

Firefox 3 free downloadA few hours ago (at 6.10 p.m. PST) all the online users of the latest version of Firefox 2 started to receive prompts to upgrade to Firefox 3 finally. All the Firefox 2.0.0.17 users will be invited to upgrade within the next couple of days. This time Firefox will not upgrade itself automatically (as it constantly did for upgrades between various versions of Firefox 2) but instead will show an offer for the users to make their comprehensive decisions:

Firefox 3 upgrade invitation

There is an option to choose to be reminded later (24 hours later) in case the user is not ready to make the decision just yet. And for the most stubborn users that are sure they are not willing to upgrade at all there’s also a possibility to cancel repeated reminders by clicking the “Never” button. This will not protect you from new offers to upgrade forever, actually, as Mozilla promises to send you a new offer in a few weeks or months (that’s a peculiar treatment of the word “never” but still not bad for those willing to stick to their previous versions). And given that many of us have heard stories of users losing some or all of their browser bookmarks in the process of upgrade there may be quite a number of such users.

But no matter how many of us have migrated successfully and willingly (and how many of us stick to Firefox 2 for some reason) this news definitely means that Mozilla has decided that the 3rd version of the popular browser is finally ready enough to meet all the users who may not follow all the developments from the Mozilla camp and participate in the world downloads record but simply upgrade when Firefox makes (or invites) them to.
