7 Advantages of the New Macbook Pro. Will They Push Users To Upgrade?
by
on October 14, 2008,
So Apple has introduced major changes to all the notebooks with the most impressive changes in the Macbook Pro machines. Yesterday we heard lots of voices speaking about their impatience to upgrade to the new Macbook Pros once they are shipping - even with almost new existing Pros in use. So today seems like a good time to summarize the most interesting things introduced into the new notebooks that will most certainly push these people even closer to stores now that we have facts instead of rumors.
And while there are many things that we are more than impressed with after the presentation, there are also other things people will most probably have their concerns about and I will mention them here as well since some of them may prevent people from buying the new Macbooks - but chances are that they won’t given the facts that Apple users are usually very loyal and the new machines are definitely more appealing than anything else they have had until today.
Manufacturing technology
Apple has demonstrated a very interesting and promising new approach to manufacturing laptops based on using a single thick piece of aluminum to cut parts away. This is the approach that makes notebooks lighter and at the same time more robust. The new enclosure dubbed “unibody” is told to save half the parts. So basically if you thought Macbook Air was amazing, now you can buy a Macbook Pro based on exactly the same technology - which will make it stronger and lighter, at the same time reducing the thickness as well.
Better visual experience
There are two things introduced to improve the visual experience with Macbook Pro - new graphics chip and the backlit LED display. First of all, the new graphics processors NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and NVIDIA 9600M GT enhance the visual experience - be it for gaming or for video editing. At the same time the new backlit LED display makes the entire image brighter and more colorful.
The only thing why people will be probably partly unhappy with the visual experience is that the display is glossy again which will make it difficult to use the notebook outdoors.
New glass trackpad
The glass trackpad is probably the first thing a regular user will be sure to notice first of all since it is something not seen in laptops until now. This time the trackpad is made of glass and is actually based on multi-touch technology without any buttons at all (trackpad itself serves as a button depending on how you handle it) which makes it absolutely unique. Absence of buttons has made it possible to make the trackpad larger now and this is also why it offers more space and freedom to the user. Software can also use the trackpad to offer multiple buttons to users.
The disadvantage here is obvious - the new process will definitely take some time getting used to it.
Battery life
Battery life is impressive this time - 4 or 5 hours depending on the type of graphics processor used. The new backlit LED display is also energy efficient, thus helping further boost the battery life. Of course we all know that advertised battery life is one thing while what we actually get on our laptops can be very different but I do hope that this is what we will actually get in this case as well.
It’s gorgeous
There’s no denying to this simple fact - the new Macbook Pro is just plain beautiful (gorgeous, magnificent or whatever word you can come up with to describe it). It possesses the perfect stylishness of all Apple products and on top of that it is also very slim - only 0.95 inches thick. This last characteristic is something we’ve been looking for in notebooks for quite a while now and we have come to think that thin is a synonym of beautiful when it comes to laptops. The general agreement is that the new laptop is incredibly thin for such a powerful machine.
Availability
Unlike what we often get with important announcements like this one, here Steve Jobs and the team have decided not to make us wait for the new products to start shipping. In fact, the new notebooks are already shipping today and will hit the stores as soon as tomorrow. This will ensure excellent results for the first sales day for Apple as everyone is still very much impressed after the presentation and people could buy on spur of the moment instead of thinking the purchase over if the laptops were not available for some more time.
Environment
And the last thing is that all the new Macbooks are also environmentally friendly on top of all the exciting features above. Apple has left out as many toxic chemicals as possible and even made the package for the laptop 37% smaller. So if living green is among your personal top priorities and you feel uncomfortable about the consumerism and buying a new laptop every year or so, Apple has introduced a solution: buying more eco-friendly laptops they now offer. Unfortunately, this does not solve the consumerism problem but we will at least feel less guilty about it.
I think these reasons are perfectly enough for Apple to see long lines of customers waiting to buy their new laptops tomorrow. Time will tell but my guess is that eBay will be full of people selling their slightly used Macbook Pros now that they are upgrading to the new ones.

Ok, I love everything I’ve read abotu it so far.
But the screen looks like it has that horrible glossy coating that gives me headaches from the glare under the wrong lighting.
Do you know if this is an option that can be removed? I hated it when they introduced it from the Mac Books and Pros (I bought a Pro this year without the option). I don’t mind the option, as long as going without it remains an option. YUCK!
I do like the extra vibrancy of it, but I hate glare with a passion.
Cade
“the display is glossy, the entire image is brighter and more colorful” This is great for you but have you ever printed a high quality image from your computer before, or have you ever exported some visual effects from a glossy screen, don’t you think that this has a lot of disadvantages for professionals? how much are you getting paid to write this crap.
“ebay will be full of people selling their slightly used Macbook Pros now that they are upgrading to the new ones.”
slightly used and your thinking of selling for an upgrading are you kidding me. If it was me I would demand apple to trade me for an upgrade. Do you know how much of an investment a macbook pro is? I bet there’s a lot of pissed off people arriving to every apple store demanding why this wasn’t announced a month ago and having to waste their money on a out dated regular priced notebook.
I used to be an apple fan but this is too much for us consumers to be wasting every year.
I have been thinking about switching to Mac for quite some time. I’ve been resisting for too long.. and with this new MacBook Pro - maybe the time has finally arrived. Can’t wait to check it out hands on…
@Cade: I think this glossy screen is what people complain about the most but it looks like it can not be removed so you’ll either have to live with it or choose another notebook. I have compiled a list of such complains here should you want to read it as well - http://profy.com/2008/10/15/the-new-apple-macbooks-are-great-but/.
@jokrd: I would honestly prefer not to answer anyone choosing to call my work here a “crap” but I wanted to mention that I have really seen a few of my acquaintances intending to see their Pros to upgrade even though they are only a few months old. I know what an investment a notebook is and I try to refrain from upgrading on a yearly basis myself and no one is supposed to upgrade without serious reasons to do just that. Honestly, I don’t think why you are so angry about the entire staff? You can continue using your own Pro for as long as you think it is good for you and upgrade whenever you are ready for that.
@Sotek: Same here actually, I am contemplating it as a serious option now though I have resisted for a few years now.
My girlfriend who is a graphic artist just got one yesterday and its screen was much much more (actually SUPER) GLOSSY then my current “old” glossy Macbook Pro. I’ve been using it for a while and everything about the laptop is PERFECT, Apple just need to treat the glass to make it less reflective. My eyes actually felt tired after 2 hour of surfing, something that never happened to me when I’m using my old glossy MBP.
If Apple plans to go with the all glass display then they should take a page from their old CRT/ eMac display, those were glass but I can hardly see any reflection because the glass was treated with anti glare coating.
James, you more than scared me wit this observation. I have been considering finally switching from a PC to a Mac for a while now but every time I upgraded my laptop, I went to a better version of a PC. This time I really like what I see with the new laptops from Apple and already began to think how I could buy it in the US and have it sent here to Russia (here they will sell at twice the price at least from my experience). But you comment on the tired eyes makes me think again. I wonder if that means I will never switch after all
Hi guys, Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I bought the Macbook Pro over the weekend, and although I like it overall, I’m having a really hard time getting used to the glare from the screen. I’m a Graphic Designer, and I can’t work comfortably for more than 3-4 hours a day because my eyes get tired. I’m seeing glare everywhere after just a few hours of working
weird. I’ll give it some more time, and try to get used to it but, I’m seriously considering returning because of the glare. cheers
The design innovations really do appeal to the product designer in me, of my former life.
But I’m just not convinced about the aesthetics; something’s just not quite right for my liking.
I’m not sure whether it’s the black keys, or the black-backed screen.
Overall though, it’s a wonderful product. And just to make you all extra envious — due to the leasing arrangement I have with Apple for my current MacBook Pro, I can get a new one at no cost.
Now, where’s that lease agreement?
New Macbook Pro shinny screen is deal breaker for me.
Sort it out Apple.
