Britney Goes Twitter, Twitter Goes Mainstream

After all, we can not constantly talk about the economic turmoil, there must be some bright spots in the daily flow of gloomy news - and here we have one with Britney Spear arriving to the social media scene with a blog of her own offering ways to befriend Britney on Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and Twitter.
Understandably it is not Britney herself blogging and sending tweets to her followers - her team is behind it but at least they attempt to send updates often and sounding like everyone gets the updates almost directly from Britney with her telling the team what to share with fans. Anyway watching Britney Spears grasping social media tools is not bad as it is making them more mainstream than the entire technology blogosphere could ever hope for.
The newly launched website features a blog and offers constant updates on Britney’s life but surprisingly lacks music content and any ways to send visitors to buy some music on iTunes or Amazon. After all, it’s hard times and inventing yet another revenue stream will not hurt but this is probably either not the goal or not the goal for now and the social media experiment is just that - an experiment that may be extended if the results are encouraging. But anyway even without music content the team has already reported over a million hits to the new site in 24 hours after its launch which is the kind of traffic the majority of celebrity blogs could never even dream of.
The fact that Britney uses a community manager to handle both her blog and her social media presence is something the technology blogosphere is unhappy about: Britney’s Twitter account is criticized already for the pop star doing it all wrong by letting her team control the account and send updates to fans. But still all the bloggers seem to admit that no matter what, Britney’s appearance on Twitter can be a great boost for Twitter itself.
As of writing this, the Twitter account of Britney Spears has sent 16 updates and is already followed by 2,404 people. It is definitely some indication that the news spread pretty fast in the blogosphere and I can not even dare to imagine what exactly we’ll see in a week or a month - this will surely be an account with tons of followers. I am 100% sure that we will see fans massively adopting Twitter to follow their favorite pop singer. But what’s even more important, other celebrities will probably follow Britney’s example and emerge on Twitter to better engage their fan bases. Good for Twitter anyway.
