Android Developers Can’t Buy G1 from T-Mobile Unless They Are Current Customers

T-Mobile G1 phone with Google AndroidToday there’s a very intriguing piece of news from Android developers – the guys behind ShopSavvy, still the most popular application on the Android Market. This thing is about their attempt to buy some new G1 phones from T-Mobile for their office earlier today.

The guys arrived to a T-Mobile store in the North Park mall in Dallas, Texas, where the company is based. But unfortunately for the guys when they tried to purchase some G1 phones, they were refused with the explanation that T-Mobile only sold the G1 phones to existing customers. This refusal was also confirmed by a regional director of T-Mobile who said that only current T-Mobile customers were eligible to buy G1 phones.

Of course this response was a complete surprise to the Android developers as G1 phone was officially launched on Wednesday nationally and everyone is supposed to be able to buy the phone (and become a T-Mobile subscriber as well) now that the phone is sold in T-Mobile stores. But this does not seem to be the case – not in Texas at least.

The irony in this particular case is that the guys from Big in Japan are hosting Android Developers Camp in Dallas and won’t even have phones to use at the event. I don’t know if this is something only Texas potential buyers will face and will update this post once I have more information but do leave a comment if you have managed to buy a G1 phone in Texas without being a T-Mobile current client.
