Parents Sell Their Baby Online in Belgium

Svetlana Gladkova,

Baby sold to a Dutch couple online in BelgiumIt looks like people can come up with absolutely unexpected ways to cope with the world financial crisis as today we hear news about a Belgium young couple selling their newborn baby online. The couple already raises one child and they explained that they decided to sell the second baby due to financial difficulties - they just did not think they could afford another child.

Same as many people thinking about selling something unusual, they decided that internet was just the right place to do that and found a potential buyer online. A Dutch couple seemed to be a good fit for their child and they accepted money for the baby to be raised in the Netherlands.

So when the boy was born, he was given the last name of his future Dutch father. The boy has been staying with his new Dutch parents since his birth in July but his real parents can now be accused of registering the birth in a false name. The amount of the purchase is not disclosed for now. UPDATE with the help of our Belgian reader: The Dutch couple paid between 5-10 thousand euro to the Belgian parents. Rather unimpressive amount to me in addition to the shocking fact of selling one’s child in itself.

Of course it is no surprise that the people in Belgium are shocked about the news uncovered today and some are already questioning if children are already for sale on eBay. But I will stick to my opinion that we should not blame the net here as it is nothing but a very powerful tool - and it is simply a matter of how people use this tool.
