Save The Planet And Win – New Website for Environmentally-Conscious Living
December 05, 2008 |
Of course it is quite difficult to like a website on its launch date when all you get is a lengthy and awkward name but I think Save The Planet And Win definitely deserves a very close look from everyone because of the great idea intended to help everyone do what we can to fight global warming.
The idea behind the website is absolutely simple and straightforward: the website promotes environmental awareness while the companies sponsoring the site pay for regular members to reduce their carbon footprint. The website members are offered incentives – points that they exchange for real dollars or use to buy carbon offsets. So helping the Earth and earning some cash here is as simple as watching sponsored messages and clicking what you are interested in. As an additional incentive the website gives away $100 to one member weekly for living green. I am actually a little uncomfortable about the necessity of offering cash incentives for people to do something worthwhile but if it is the most efficient way to bring people in and draw their attention to the project, I think there is nothing particularly wrong about it.
Save The Planet And Win positions itself as the very first Voluntary Personal Carbon Registry (VPCR) in the U.S. The website is intended to help anyone reduce their carbon footprint by offering appropriate actions. The website will let its users to calculate, monitor, and eventually reduce their personal carbon footprint. It will be possible to purchase verified carbon offsets here as well. The social functionality of the site will also allow environmentally-conscious people to communicate with each other and share advice on green lifestyle.
Overall I think it is more than important to have projects like this launched to help everyone understand the impact of global warming and offer us additional advice on what every single person can do to help save the Earth – before it is too late (or is it already?).

Great post Svetlana – us techies can make a difference as I don't think it's too late. With bloggers like yourself taking time to cover sites like this, I think we have a chance.
