You Will Hardly Make Billions Blogging but You Can Be a Blogging Billionaire

Svetlana Gladkova,

Forbes found blogging billionairesThe expert in all things related to rich people Forbes has published a list of billionaires who are also bloggers. And while the title “The Billionaire Bloggers” may sound encouraging to some suggesting that these people made their huge money blogging, the truth is that the only thing the article proves is that you can be both a billionaire and a blogger - but unfortunately there will hardly be any connection between your two statuses.

Forbes currently has a total of 1,125 billionaires on their list. And 13 of them are known to have blogs at the same time. This means that the portion of blogging billionaires is not that bad - 1.16%. These only include people who actually blog regularly on their personal or corporate blogs, not guest-blogging occasionally for some other blogs. So here is the list of people Forbes selected as both billionaires and bloggers (sorted alphabetically):

Bill Marriott, Mariott hotels magnate

Carl Icahn, financier and famous shareholder activist

Donald Trump, actually masters 3 blogs for branding and promotion

J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter

Jerry Yang, Yahoo co-founder and soon-to-be former CEO

Khalaf Al Habtoor, Dubai construction magnate

Marc Cuban, internet billionaire recently accused of insider trading by SEC

Mark Zukerberg, Facebook founder

Mikhail Prokhorov, Russian metals magnate

Oprah Winfrey, the outstanding media personality

Pierre Omidyar, eBay founder

Sergey Brin, Google co-founder who only launched his personal blog a few months ago

T. Boone Pickens (aged 80) promoting his pro-wind power Pickens Plan

If you are interested in why a person who is a billionaire and is supposed to already be perfectly satisfied with what he or she has in life should blog at all, the main reasons are self-promotion and proud demonstration of wealth, connecting to the crowd and fans, or to influencing other people’s thinking and opinions.

I could not help but wonder where all these people (super-busy and some of them having no relation with technology at all) find the time and desire to deal with all the hassle involved in blogging but the thing is that actually embracing technology is not really a must for a billionaire to be a blogger: at least one of the bloggers (Bill Marriott) is said to not to know how to type with his staffers typing his spoken or handwritten posts.

But the main conclusion for everyone considering blogging his or her profession is that that no matter how much many of us could want it, chances of making millions (not to mention billions) are really tiny and we only rarely see multi-million acquisitions in the blogging world. But when you already are a billionaire it will not hurt for you to start a blog - and you will be sure to have significant number of followers as people will be naturally inclined to hope you will share some stories and tips on making your first million. So blogging sounds like a logical next step for a person who already has everything - but hardly a good beginning if you are only on your way to earning everything.
