Places to Work on Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions
December 31, 2008 |
We have spoken already about how women tend to make more New Year’s resolutions but are less willing to keep them and one comment on that post suggested a few things about making a New Year’s resolution and actually keeping it. The most obvious tip is to make the resolution public as if you have people observing your progress (or lack of it) it will likely to be a good incentive for you to keep the promise. So I have decided to collect a few places online where a person can share the New Year’s resolutions to get some public support and feel responsibility to live up to the obligations.
Of course there are multiple tools intended to help people keep their promises. The idea that I personally like the most is that of the Don’t Break The Chain project: it is intended to help every single person keep a promise using the motivation chain technique where you will have to select the days you will work on your goal and the most important part is not to miss a day.
Another nice idea is that of Joe’s Goals – a very simple tool to keep track of one’s progress in working on achieving a goal stating both successes and failures and keeping score to see how you approach completion of the goal. The goals can be shared with friends so that they could support you on the way to achieving success.
One of the most advanced communities can be found on Tools to Life where one can choose a goal and connect with like-minded individuals to achieve that goal. The latest addition to the range of such sites seems to be Pledgehammer – a very simple and straightforward website where you can state your goals and get public support in its accomplishment.
There are also websites intended to help one keep promises in particular fields of life. For example, sites like Traineo or Fitlink will help you achieve your goals related to health, fitness and losing weigh (which happens to appear on more New Year’s resolutions than any other promise).
But if you are already comfortable on some social media sites, they also often provide you with tools to help you achieve the goals you state on the New Year’s eve. For example, on Facebook you will find a selection of groups dedicated to sharing one’s New Year’s resolutions and discussing them – this one seems to be the most active one. Also here you will find a number of applications dedicated to resolutions – My Goals and Resolutions, Crazy Goals, and Will I keep my resolution? that allows you to post your resolutions right to your profile and get feedback and support from your Facebook friends.
On Twitter you can track all talks about New Year’s resolutions from users here and add your own voice to the chorus. On FriendFeed I have only found one room that looks to be suitable to share one’s New Year’s resolutions – the name is Goal Setting and it lacks resolutions for the New Year from FriendFeed users for now so today sounds like a great time to right the wrong – or create a dedicated room just for that if you are not too busy thinking over your own resolutions.
Now I think everyone has plenty of places to state and share some great goals for self-improvements and achievements in the New Year so take your time before the New Year actually arrives to use some of these tools to make sure you will actually keep the promises you make on the New Year’s Eve. Happy New Year!

Thanks for mentioning Pledgehammer. Happy New Year to all!
