Twitter Day Today: Are You Celebrating? #twitterday

Svetlana Gladkova

As the vast majority of people hardly realize, today is the 140th day of the year which is supposed to be a good reason to celebrate the day of Twitter – the immensely popular web service that is trying to teach the world the arts of brevity, clarity, and precision by making us express everything in 140 characters or less. Or at least it is supposed to be a good enough reason by two Ukrainian Twitter users who came up with the idea of celebrating Twitter Day on the 140th day of the year which is May 20th or May 19th in a leap year.

In fact, internet community is fascinated with numbers when we make decisions on when we should celebrate our community holidays. This is why we celebrate blog day on the 31st of August because when written 31.08 the date resembles the word ‘blog’, the programmer day on the 256th day of the year and web developer day on the 4th of April (the famous 404 error comes into play here).

So the idea of celebrating Twitter day today seems to be obvious – especially that it is pretty difficult to decide when to celebrate Twitter birthday otherwise: on the day of the first tweet by Jack Dorsey sent to his teammates only or on the day when Twitter was publicly launched or probably on some other day only known to the team behind Twitter when the idea of Twitter came to their minds. So to make things easier, the initiative of Twitter Day as the 140th day of the year is here.

Of course it is up to you to decide if you actually want to celebrate or not and if Twitter means enough in your life to have a small home party – the only thing actually suggested by the guys behind the idea is to celebrate Twitter day on Twitter by using the #twitterday hashtag in one of your posts today.

Since the initiative comes from Ukraine, Twitter users in the Russian-speaking internet segment are already celebrating and the idea has received quite some buzz here. The guys behind the idea have not received any official support from Jack Dorsey who they have reportedly contacted with the idea – or from Ashton Kutcher as supposedly the most influential Twitter celebrity who they also contacted on Twitter.

But if you feel like having a holiday today and celebrating in 140 characters or less, head to the small dedicated website for the idea or simply wish something good to your followers on Twitter – with #twitterday in your post, obviously. Or you can take the rough road and finally explain Twitter to your parents or grand-parents – in 140 characters or less, of course.
