Earlier today the Gmail for mobile team introduced version 2.0 of Gmail for Mobile, the application that enables Gmail users to easier handle their Gmail accounts on the go. This version is an upgrade of the Gmail application for Java ME and BlackBerry phones.
Working on this new release the team focused mainly on the speed and reliability of the application so the users are supposed to notice significant speed improvement and overall improved performance.
As for the user-visible feature, the most important one is definitely offline access - even though the team labels it as "basic" for now. The offline features available with the application include reading of incoming messages and composing new messages that can be saved to the outbox to be automatically sent later when coverage is regained...

Today there's a very intriguing piece of news from Android developers - the guys behind ShopSavvy, still the most popular application on the Android Market. This thing is about their attempt to buy some new G1 phones from T-Mobile for their office earlier today.
The guys arrived to a T-Mobile store in the North Park mall in Dallas, Texas, where the company is based. But unfortunately for the guys when they tried to purchase some G1 phones, they were refused with the explanation that T-Mobile only sold the G1 phones to existing customers...

SearchEngineWatch has reporting on the results of quite an interesting survey about how the economic downturn is supposed to affect marketing budgets for various businesses. Quite understandably this is the question that bothers the entire internet industry now as we are trying to figure out if anything ad-supported (both blogs and startups) will be able to survive the recession or if we should start packing our possessions and moving to some other businesses...

ShopSavvy must be one of the best-known applications for Android, Google's mobile operating system that we have seen debuting on the first phone - aptly named T-Mobile G1. The guys from Big in Japan, the company behind ShopSavvy, have built the application exclusively for Android platform. After winning Android Developer Challenge, the application has been widely discussed everywhere and the huge promotion supported by Google (a representative of the company was even present at the G1 phone event in New York) was supposed to help boost the application's growth a lot...

Back in July we reported on acquisition of a Russian contextual advertising company Begun (one of the largest companies working in the field in Russia) by Google. At the time we suggested that a combination of contextual advertising sold by Begun and Google AdSense could very well serve to monopolize the market of such ads in the Russian segment of the internet.
Now it looks like I was not alone questioning if Google would build yet another monopoly with this acquisition: today Russian news outlets report that the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service has banned the acquisition...

So the first day of G1 phone for T-Mobile official shipping is coming to its end soon and the first owners have already started playing with their shiny new toys (well, maybe not exactly shiny but at least new and supposedly rewarding in terms of software).
And since this phone is about the software and not about the looks, I thought I'd summarize the details for what we now know and what we should expect on the Android Market, the marketplace where the applications for Android-based devices - both the T-Mobile G1 and whatever new devices launched in the future - will be distributed by the developers for free or for a fee...

It looks like Google is absolutely positive that Gmail users are very lazy and not exactly intelligent as the Gmail team seems to be determined to help us do everything related to every single email correctly. It looks like the team has been particularly active making sure no one will even be able to make any common emailing mistakes when using the free email system by Google. There were a few examples of this activity recently with a few new features making their appearances in Labs.
First, you can remember Gmail offering to track attachments when attachments are supposed to be in the email but you forget to add them...

Contrasting to Apple's impressive results of the 4th quarter announced today, Yahoo has also announced results of its 3rd quarter - and these results are far from impressive with net revenue dropping by 64%.
In the 3rd quarter of 2008 Yahoo generated $54 million of net income which is definitely terrible compared to $151 million in the same period of 2007. Revenue in the 3rd quarter was at $1,8 billion which is still a 1% increase compared to the same period of 2007.
At that the company was doing pretty well in terms of product development and traffic...

Today Apple has announced financial results of the 4th quarter and they are better than the Wall Street analytics predicted: with 6.9 million iPhones sold and Mac sales at all times high it could hardly be better. The revenue announced is $7.9 billion and net profit is $1.14 billion. The quarterly revenue announced today brings Apple's annual revenue for 2008 to the amount 35% higher than in the previous year.
In terms of the products sold the results translate into the mentioned above 6.9 millions of iPhones (compared to only 1...
