The Few, the Proud
A few days ago, in its commentary section, the Wall Street Journal reported on an interview with General James T. Conway, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.
In the interview, Gen. Conway muses on the way the tactics and equipment of the Marines are changing, in response to the unique nature of the responsibilities they have in Iraq and the evolving nature of their mission.
One way [...]

Netflix, LG Plan Release Of Set-Top Box Friendly To Digital Film Downloads

Paul Glazowski

Not a week has passed since I assembled a list of predictions for 2008 for your amusement, and already we find two well-known corporate entities deliver an official press release proving one postulation to be quite on-target.
Indeed, both Netflix and LG have teamed together to form a sort of digital download alliance, giving something of a morsel of credence to the article published here in Profy last Saturday. The arrangement the two partners in cinematic deliverance [...]

China’s Rise: Projecting Increased Growth For 2008

Paul Glazowski

If you somehow managed to keep up with the goings on of the broad international news space throughout 2007, you know there’s one topic in particular that received copious amounts of attention. No, not that Mexican repellant them paranoid repubs and loose-limbed dems signed off on. Nor the tinderscape that was/is southern California. Darfur? Nope. (Too bad, though. It sure would’ve been good to see the American media juggle that ball a tad bit more.) Pakistan? Nah. The year was [...]

Year In Review: My Favorite Launch Of 2007

Paul Glazowski

The last 365.2425 days - give or take - have comprised a pretty remarkable period of time. Everything in the tech space has appeared supercharged since that day of new beginnings past. Whether you look at advancements made in root technologies that have enabled the transmission of higher and higher quality media over the Web, or more singular accomplishments like new utilitarian services among the likes of office software built both for local and remote use and backup options that [...]

5 Predictions Of Things To Come In 2008

Paul Glazowski

The year is almost through. Eggnog’s running low. The once fresh-cut Douglas-firs placed inside millions of homes over the holidays are running dry and approaching their final demise. Bottles of bubbly are being prepped and placed on standby for the global celebration to happen next week for the new calendar’s arrival.
So I think it’s only fitting to follow convention here and offer up a few wise words in anticipation of suspected things to come in the wide world of Web [...]

Paul Glazowski

The Webby Awards, a celebratory symposium of websites (and their creators) voted by way of a public poll to be the best in their respective categories, is an annual event going into its 12th installation next year. And we would be remiss not to mention to our readers that today, November 14th, 2007, is the deadline for submissions.
So, you know, if your ego’s extra large and you feel deserving of a nifty trophy for all the hard word you’ve [...]

Cisco To Venture Into Web Multimedia Delivery Business

Paul Glazowski

Recognize the name Cisco? Of course you do. It's the name of the company responsible for maintaining much of the telecommunications infrastructure for companies big and small in the US and elsewhere. It’s distributed fiber all across this here corn-fed land (a tired pun, I know), and established great numbers of switching stations keep those lines lit with activity. It’s even gotten into the business of making gadgets like phones and WiFi routers and such in recent years.
And now it’s [...]

Microsoft To Challenge Flickr, Among Other Web Media Outfits, With New Service

Paul Glazowski

Hey everybody, Microsoft’s putting together a Flickr competitor!
Yes, it’s true. Haven’t you heard? Shocking it is that the world has so far failed to take notice of this revelation. Much notice, anyway. As reported in CNET’s Webware publication – and not many news outlets elsewhere – Redmond has let known its intentions (via a job posting, no less) to make itself a much more viable competitor in the realm of online media; in particular, the segment of photography.
And [...]

Adobe Photoshop Express Slated For Beta Release By End Of 2007

Paul Glazowski

We brought you word first in early March 2007 of Adobe’s development of a Web-based Photoshop utility. Then in early September, Adobe broke its silence on the subject once more to an audience at Photoshop World. There it whet the palate of the masses with a brief teaser. A month later, at the company’s Max 2007 conference, it all but pulled the curtain off the project entirely, offering a brief demo that the blogosphere grew quite excited over.
Yesterday, Adobe let [...]

Presidential Candidates And The Social Networking Space

Paul Glazowski

I read a Reuters story this morning, in which a 19-year-old by the name of LJ Tsunis was reported as saying how beneficial it would be for presidential candidates in the US running in the 2008 election to “start hanging out on Facebook.”
I would argue the opposite. It would be a very bad thing if candidates were to spend time on Facebook. Or any other Web-based social network for that matter.
This is no attack on those websites. They’re currently enjoying [...]
