The Power Of Web Apps Examined

Paul Glazowski

I trek over to Slate.com most evenings, where usually there is published a headline or two I find interesting enough to click through to. Scarce, however, are there pieces to do with the goings on in the technology world. Stuff about various Washingtonians and watchers of those Washingtonians crops up on the site with great frequency, and things generally classifiable as “miscellaneous” (not by Slate, but by the average reader) tend to take up most of the front page’s [...]

Following Behind Photobucket, YouTube Implements Web-Based Video Editor

Paul Glazowski

We all knew it would happen. It was only a matter of time.
Over the weekend, YouTube, following closely behind Photobucket (now a MySpace entity), told the world it too had fallen for Adobe’s Web-based video editing software solution, Premiere Express. Photobucket began offering its own Premiere Express-powered editor back in late February of this year.
Other than the thematic color choices, not a drop of uniqueness appears within either Photobucket’s or YouTube’s implementation of the product. And Adobe [...]

Bigger And Better Than Ever

Think Web 2.0 is a lotta hype backed up by little realism? The Web 2.0 Expo held last week (April 15-18) proved the exact opposite. Well, maybe not the exact opposite (there was still a fair amount of hype). But it was all very real. If not, 30,000 feet of space was a lot to fill with hot air and no substance.
Good thing there was a lot of substance at the Expo, where dozens of exhibitors showed off the [...]

At NAB, Microsoft’s First Showing Of ‘Silverlight’

Having had dominated Web video for…a long time, Adobe’s Flash is justifiably the standard when it comes to displaying clips of films, television shows, podcasts, etc. The company has built a vast client base around the platform, and thus regularly attains great amounts of feedback and suggestions, which it internalizes to help enhance the product. The fact that Adobe chooses to focus heavily on the product also enables it the option of doling out updates with relative frequency, which [...]

AppleTV To Deliver

Phil Butler

Apple has shipped their first AppleTV units to stores according to their web site. The wireless set-top-box that can broadcast tunes, movies, trailers, podcasts and photos from your PC to your widescreen TV is winging its way to stores now.
Apple seems determined to lead the way in producing and shipping hardware that can bring Web 2.0 into the living room. Users can download movies or other media from the Web and utilize the 802.11 wireless to sync directly from PC or [...]

Adobe Photoshop Online: It’s Real

Paul Glazowski

A few days ago we mentioned Adobe’s delivery of Remix. It’s been offered first to Photobucket members, but the software maker plans to expand its clientele for the new video mixer in the coming months. The company also uncovered Flex a while back, an environment in which to create websites and web-based applications. Adobe calls it new, but reviewers seem to say differently. But, for the sake of product release dates and timelines and all that stuff, let’s just call it [...]

Vyew Collaboration Software Out of Beta

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Vyew, a collaborative online conferencing application, released its version 2.1 this week, officially moving out of beta status. The site offers three levels of subscription: a free ad-based service that limits participants and working projects (called VyewBooks); Plus, which turns off ads for up to 5 people, and allows a la carte additions of ad-free users and additional VyewBooks over the five allowed, and Professional, with up to 45 ad-free participants, 20 VyewBooks, and the option to purchase additional ad-free [...]

Photobucket, Adobe ‘Remix’ Online Video

Paul Glazowski

A year or two ago, you could be forgiven for thinking that the whole web app fad was just that, a fad. This new blooming market would amuse us for a little while, but in the end, the trusty stuff installed in our own systems would win out. Forward to today, and we’re seeing even the largest of localized software businesses showing concern over what Google, 37signals, Yahoo!, ThinkFree, Netvibes, and others have managed to do: stick around and thrive. [...]

Adobe Uses del.icio.us to Connect with Customers

Emily

I spend a lot of time researching how different places use social bookmarking and tags. One example I have found is Adobe, which is actually a great example of how a company can use social bookmarking and tags.
Adobe uses del.icio.us to share links with their customers. Their account is at http://del.icio.us/adobe and they currently have 634 shared bookmarks. You can find bookmarks related to their products including Acrobat, ColdFusion, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Illustrator, InDesign and PhotoShop.
Adobe has also created a [...]
