Newspapers Make Less Money Off Their Sites but Should Blogs Worry?

Svetlana Gladkova

There is some piece of bad news in the online advertising revenue field today - and the news seems to be relevant both to traditional and new media outlets. The Newspaper Association of America has reported that online revenue generated by websites of newspapers has finally switched from continuous double-digit growth to devastating fall: financial results from the 2nd quarter ($777 million) are 2.4% lower than the results from the same period last year.
The association started measuring and reporting online [...]

Online Advertising Still Strong So Let’s Stay Reasonable

Svetlana Gladkova

We have rarely heard any actually optimistic news recently due to the economic turmoil we are now in so it is refreshing to see some positive piece of news for a change. The news is IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) and PricewaterhouseCoopers report on the state of online advertising in the US during the first half of 2008.
The results of the industry are very inspiring: internet advertising grew by 15.2% compared to the same period of 2007 and achieved $11.5 billion. [...]

Are We Sure About Pending Collapse of Ad-Supported Internet?

Svetlana Gladkova

The current economic crisis is already compared quite often to the Great Depression of 1930s. And while similarities are already here and probably we will have more of them to witness if the situation continues to worsen, there is one thing that bothers many of us here in the technology blogosphere - the future of internet. It is a well-known fact that the vast majority of internet businesses (startups and blogs alike) rely heavily on advertising for their income.
The first [...]

Twitter Election Site: Are We Seeing a Business Model for Twitter?

Svetlana Gladkova

Yesterday we saw the first niche website launched by Twitter - Twitter E08 focused on presidential election campaign in the US. The website works by simply filtering twitter messages (tweets) from all users by certain keywords and aggregate these messages into one page. The site is updated with new topical messages in real time.
In addition to that, users can send their own messages right from the site and these messages will be sent to their Twitter timeline as well. Besides, [...]

Men Care Online about Sex, Food, Cars, and Gadgets

Svetlana Gladkova

Earlier this week comScore released results of a study carried together with Leo Burnett advertising agency to see how male internet users behave online. In the effort to “track the virtual man” the study was to find out what men really do online. Obviously, the main reason for the study (since conducted jointly with an advertising agency) was to see how to better target men with online advertising.
So basically the study separated men into 4 categories depending on their approach [...]

Svetlana Gladkova

Today LinkedIn is launching an advertising network of its own that will be sure to add some nice revenue stream to the already quite healthy company. Right now LinkedIn sells ads that various visitors of the network see when browsing the website with CPM rates surprisingly high for the social networking industry - starting at $30 CPM.
The newly launched LinkedIn Audience Network will include some publishing partners that will be able to sell ads on their sites via the network [...]

Advertising Startups at TechCrunch 50: Ignoring the Industry?

Svetlana Gladkova

Yesterday during one of the sections of TechCrunch 50 conference three startups were launched that all offer their solutions in the same niche - online advertising. Actually I’m afraid I miss one thing here: advertising is what the vast majority of web publishers use to earn revenue so it is kind of a foundation stone for the entire industry and still we only get to see 3 startups at TechCrunch 50 and I have not seen any at DEMOfall after [...]

MySpace Stats Show Huge Disproportion in Online Advertising

Svetlana Gladkova

Yesterday at TechCrunch 50 conference Michael Arrington interviewed MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe. One of the questions they discussed was about revenue the social network generated and the most interesting revelation of the discussion was that only 9 countries generate 95% of all advertising revenue for MySpace.
Sure, it is a well-known fact that users from some countries are monetized easier than users from other countries - with usually everything beyond the Northern America and Europe considered to be poorly monetized international [...]

Forget Discrimination, It Is Better to Be a Woman Online

Svetlana Gladkova

I feel that we talk too much about gender online. I also feel that we talk way too much about women and how we are discriminated online. I believe that women have been fighting for equal rights for too long to easily forget about the fight, stop for a minute and realize the fight is probably over. If you behave like you are already equal, no one will doubt you are.
But if you remind everyone that you are actually a [...]

LiveRail Announces Funding and A New Monetization Platform for Video Websites

Svetlana Gladkova

LiveRail, the startup claiming to revolutionize video advertising, has two things to announce. First of all, good news for the startup itself is funding of $500 thousand from Pond Venture Partners. Hopefully the money will be used to bring its video advertising products to the next level.
Another announcement today is a new video content monetization platform Junction that is intended to consolidate and optimize video advertising for publishers enabling them to increase (and hopefully maximize) their revenue when using ads [...]
