From Blackhat USA 2007: Some AJAX Apps Not So Secure

Paul Glazowski

The Black Hat USA 2007 conference took place in Las Vegas over the four days of July 28 through August 2. Lots of topics and issues were covered, and lots of holes were exploited (for demonstration purposes only, of course), between all the briefings and training sessions.
One item that received a fair amount of attention was AJAX, the magical asynchronous duo that is Java and XML, employed by a great number of developers today at small startups and Internet [...]

SubmitYourVote: Pretty UI for a Crowded Space

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I seem to be developing a specialty here writing about online polling sites. The latest entrant into the space is SubmitYourVote, a new social polling site with a very pretty interface.
SubmitYourVote has all the hallmarks of a Web 2.0 site: logo with beta status, minimalist site design, and, of course, the social aspect of creating your own polls, voting on other polls, commenting and tagging of polls, and a nifty Ajax feature that takes your polling results and places them [...]

Nielsen and Net Rankings: Still Not Getting It

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Nielsen/NetRatings announced this week that they were going to change the way they rank web sites, moving from prioritizing page views in determining sites' popularity to "total minutes" and "total sessions."
What was immediately clear from the announcement and the initial coverage is that the Powers That Be in the web popularity game are still not getting it, and neither are the media outlets, many of whom are probably buying ads based on this antiquated system.
Forbes references "increasingly using a software [...]

Google Debuts ‘Gears’, A Trio Of Developer APIs

Paul Glazowski

Google's made many headlines lately, but today one particular announcement by the company shadowing almost all others. We say almost, because the biggest elephant in the room remains the Google-DoubleClick deal. $3.1bn is one card that’s really very difficult to trump.
On to the latest news. It turns out Google’s been hard at work trying to construct a bridge between online and offline use of applications that as of now can only be accessed with Internet connections, and come out from [...]

Scriptless Day 7/7/07 - The Day I Might Lose My Mind

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

If I'd seen the information on Scriptless Day on the first of April, I'd have been convinced I was being taken by another April Fool's Day joke, but apparently, this is no joke. Some crazies (and I'm using that term with the utmost affection, I assure you) have decided that the best way to highlight the way in which we should give thanks to what JavaScript has brought us in the form of Ajax and Web 2.0 applications is to [...]

Ajax Exploit Threatens Web 2.0 Security

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

In the comments section of my review of Clipperz, CEO of Clipperz Marco Barulli disagreed with my concerns about using third-party libraries for Clipperz, as well as an open-source JavaScript cryptographic library. Fortify Software would seem to agree with me, releasing an advisory this week on a known vulnerability in Web 2.0 sites that rely on Ajax.
Fortify examined 12 popular Ajax frameworks, including the biggies - Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! - as well as open-source releases. Their [...]

One Part AJAX, One Part March Madness

Paul Glazowski

Ever put a wager down on something you’re not sure of? How about something you think is a certainty? Maybe you’re into sports. And, low and behold, you’ve come love AJAX, heart and soul. Well, put those three [ingredients?] together and you have PicksPal’s March Madness applet, which gives you an easy way to satisfy your craving for Net-based gambling that’s all sorts of legal.
