What Should Bloggers Use Instead of Alexa to Discuss Rates with Advertisers?

Svetlana Gladkova

There’s a very interesting post on CenterNetworks today full of righteous indignation against Alexa and the way it has recently lowered rankings for numerous blogs. In fact, I have noticed that myself for Profy but decided not to bother because we have never relied on Alexa to measure our traffic.
The assumption is that Alexa changed the algorithm not to take traffic coming from social media and social news sites into account - and Andy Beard has a number of interesting [...]

Social Networks Continue To Excite The Venture Capitalist Crowd

Paul Glazowski

Tired of all the social networking news circulating the blogosphere? You’re not alone. There are lots of folks who can’t take the headlines about Facebook, MySpace and all the rest.
But the venture capitalist crowd feels the complete opposite.
Yes, they’re still very bullish, apparently. Very recently word filtered around that Hi5, a very popular and quickly expanding network due to increasing interest outside the US (Alexa now ranks the network as the 11th most popular site on the Internet) [...]

AlexaDex - Virtual Stock Market You Will Grow Addicted To

killerStartups.com

AlexaDex is a dangerously addictive virtual stock market trading game. Users are given 10,000 dex dollars to spend on shares as they please, then watch their stocks rise and fall and compete to roll out number one on the AlexaDex each quarter. You can view the top 25 investors, and those who have gained the most (in terms of the percentage their earnings have jumped in a given amount of time). You can also view on the homepage the recent transactions [...]

The depth of the story was reported by TechCrunch back in March, but essentially Statsaholic began to gain popularity because of their features, but changed their name and stopped using the conflicting Alexaholic domain to appease Amazon. Amazon got [...]

Phil Butler

Bebo outranked Google, but does the fate of Web 2.0 hinge on numbers?
Web 2.0 is such an interesting subject for discussion and investigation. Lately I have been a little focused on some credibility issues we should all consider in evaluating sites, startups and other elements of our communal experience.
One big problem I have is the term "unique registered users", because it implies that a site has say 300,000 dedicated regular people who go there. Sites often try to validate [...]
