DRM-Free AmazonMP3 Store Completes Catalog With Sony BMG Deal

Michael Garrett

Amazon today announced that its completely DRM-free catalog of MP3 downloads was expanded through the addition of Sony BMG music, which should be available to consumers by the end of the month.
With all four major music labels now on board, it looks like AmazonMP3 can now be considered a real threat to iTunes and its more limited variety of DRM-free music (over 3 million at AmazonMP3 compared to just 2 million at iTunes). “All four major labels will [...]

Spokeo: I’m Almost Certain They Meant Spooky-o

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I've heard dribs and drabs of news about Spokeo over the past year, but it took a push from Guy Kawasaki's blog over the holidays to actually get me to log in and check it out.
Spokeo, if you haven't heard about it, is an all-in-one aggregator for all your social networking sites, from Amazon wishlists to YouTube videos. In all, 33 sites are currently supported in Spokeo, allowing you to keep tabs on every site in one place.
Here's what's [...]

Amazon Charts Record Year-End Sales; Adds Warner To MP3 Store

Paul Glazowski

Unlike many retail giants of mostly brick-and-mortar, chain-linked proportions headquartered in the US, Amazon has shown a nice finish to 2007. The company, one of the largest of all online retail outlets, displayed a record number of sales this month – 5.4 million for the day of December 10th alone - effectively pushing the marketplace to a 13-year high, reported the London Times yesterday.
And there’s more. The mega-success, in tandem with the Warner Music Group, also revealed earlier this [...]

Amazon Forges Tie With Music Startup SellABand

Paul Glazowski

Yesterday, Amazon let known its establishment of a partnership between itself and the European startup SellABand. The association it will have with SellABand is simple: it will sell music released by artists developed through the independent service.
Why do we share this piece of information with you? Well, as many already know, Amazon several months ago unveiled its long-awaited music download service, appropriately named AmazonMP3. It was generally hailed by the blogosphere as welcome competition to Apple’s dominant iTunes [...]

Do You Know Where Your Information Is? And Where It’s Going?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Within the past two years, Web 2.0 has gone completely mainstream. Much as the World Wide Web was once the near-exclusive playground for college students and early adopters, everything from social networking to Ajax apps are familiar to just about everyone online.
With no signs of slowing down, however, each and every user-driven site, from Web 1.0 online shopping to nifty 2.0 apps like Geni, collects data on its users. Amazon has your credit card information, your purchase history, and your [...]

Fancast - Now With Full Episodes

Michael Garrett

Today's launch of Hulu (and its partnership with Comcast) reminded me of Fancast, which is a hybrid entertainment portal from the cable service provider.
Back in August when I reviewed Fancast, I admired it and described it as “web 2.0 meets IMDB meets TV Guide” for its comprehensive database of movies and television shows that also provided viewers with TV listings in an effort to help visitors decide what to watch each day on television.
Just as expected, my visit to [...]

Record Companies vs iTunes: A Fight Of Deeply Flawed Logic

Paul Glazowski

I’ve heard continuously over the past few months of growing friction between Apple, its iTunes marketplace, and the major record companies. Yes, the one’s that have been selling their content through iTunes. And at quite a fast pace, as of late. (What is the count of tracks sold now? 3 billion? 3.5? 4? Somewhere in that area, I presume.)
And quite honestly, I’ve never really understood why they haven’t being playing very well together. I mean, sure, they’ve got their [...]

A Marketplace For All Things Digital

Paul Glazowski

There’s Amazon and its copycats for the online retail of physical goods (leaving aside the fact that Amazon is now working the intangible side of the digital retail world as well). Why not erect something similarly multifaceted (in the way that Amazon sells different types of goods and not only books) without involving so much as a cardboard box or a pint of diesel between seller and buyer?
That’s what the folks being Zipidee (I’m not fond of the [...]

Is Facebook Working On An iTunes Competitor?

Michael Garrett

Everyone knows that Apple has the most successful online music store, with iTunes selling more than 3 billion songs.
Recently Amazon entered the digital music market with AmazonMP3, offering only DRM-free songs at a price more affordable than the $1.29 customers pay for non-DRM tracks on iTunes.
Now, according to Nick O'Neill of AllFacebook, Facebook could be the next company to take on iTunes. While this sounds fishy, as no one has received any previous word of such news, it does seem [...]
