Tech Blogosphere: More Water Cooler, Less Telephone Game, Please

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Remember playing the "telephone game" as a child? You'd stand in a line or sit in a circle and pass messages from one person to the next, whispering into an ear. At the end of the line, the message was usually so garbled from the first person as to be unrecognizable from what it began as. So goes the tech blogosphere these days.
News moves at a fast and furious pace, with each blogger trying to jump on the latest news [...]

Fair Use, the AP, and the Internet: Why the AP Isn’t Wrong

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

The AP isn't wrong.
For some odd reason, there is a viewpoint in Web 2.0 that as long as everyone seems to be doing it, the laws should be changed, or somehow re-interpreted. High on the list of those laws that the horde is clamoring to overturn are those dealing with copyright infringement and libel.
The issues regarding copyright and fair use rear their collective head fairly regularly when it comes to online content, with the music industry as well as the [...]

The Associated Press reported this week that Sony BMG “inked a licensing deal with Yahoo! Inc. that clears the way for people to upload files with music or video content by the record company’s artists” to Yahoo!-owned sites.

The latest round [...]

Phil Butler

A human rights group is suing Yahoo Inc. on the grounds that the company assisted China's communist government with torture and dropping dime on dissidents. The World Organization for Human Rights USA seeks unspecific damages and Yahoo's participation in securing the release of the dissidents. Just after I complimented them on being more internationally educated and more refined than Google too, it never fails.
Yahoo! acknowledges turning over data to the Chinese government under penalty of law there according to an AP [...]

Searching For Grumps?

Phil Butler

I just finished an article at Yahoo! News by Michael Liedtke of AP. The article describes a new search engine designed to appeal to aging baby boomers. Cranky.com processes search requests from the point of view of older users. Basically, the new search engine provides fewer results so that older users will not be overwhelmed with all the data. Google and other advanced search engines really provide way too much data for older people to see and process. There is an aggravation aspect to this factor, [...]
