Apple Got $20 Billion Cheaper Today But How Justified Is That?

Svetlana Gladkova

This morning analysts from both Morgan Stanley and RBC downgraded their recommendations on Apple stock which resulted in tremendous fall of Apple’s stock by almost 18% or $22.98 to reach $105.26 at closing. This made the market valuation of Apple almost $20 billion lower.
Analysts claim that their surveys show that people intend to buy less Macs - both laptops and desktops with 40% of people planning to cut their general spend on electronics in the next 3 months. The only [...]

Social Media Getting Ready for the Doomsday

Svetlana Gladkova

The world’s largest particles collider (Large Hadron Collider) has successfully completed its first major test by CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva by firing a beam of protons around the 27-kilometer underground tunnel. This experiment is supposed to increase our knowledge of the makeup of the universe. Some skeptics predicted (and still continue to predict) that this experiment may have deplorable consequences for the mankind and the earth because it could cause formation of micro black holes that [...]

Predictable Return of NBC to iTunes

Svetlana Gladkova

Earlier today at its “Let’s Rock” event Apple has made a few announcements about the new iTunes version 8. The announcements include a new feature called Genius to automatically build playing lists for you and availability of HD content in iTunes priced at $2.99 apiece.
And this brings me to the most intriguing part for me: NBC content is back in iTunes store with a range of new HD shows, including The Office, Monk, Battlestar Galactica, 30 Rock. HD shows will [...]

Twitter on the iPhone: Which App Will Rule Them All?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

The iPhone has developed the same culture of Twitteritis that the rest of the Web has in the two-and-a-half weeks since the launch of the App Store and the iPhone 3G . Everyone wants to build the perfect Twitter application, but with so many to choose from, which one do you choose?
Twitterific would seem to be the odds-on favorite to win. Already established on the desktop, the blue bird's move to the iPhone was both logical and expected. Not [...]

Aurora Feint Returns, but How Safe and Legal IS the App Store?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Gizmodo noticed that Aurora Feint spent some time yesterday delisted from Apple's App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch, apparently due to security violations. The app, a game that's part casual gaming, part MMO, was alleged to be sending a user's contact list up to the Aurora Feint servers unencrypted.
The game is back in the App Store today with the contact list integration feature removed, and additional security features, according to the Aurora Feint staff, who are also doing [...]

Apple’s iPhone Apps Stunt Mobile Social Growth

Triston McIntyre

You have the most successful touchscreen handset on the market, your brand image could sell contacts to the blind, and guess what?  You are largely responsible for a roadblock in the advancement of mobile social networking.  What I'm referring to is the fact that new iPhone applications are not allowed to run continuously as a background processes.
Of course, I doubt Apple or its head man Steve Jobs directly intend to inhibit the advancement of mobile social media by [...]

As the GOOG Turns: the Android Soap Opera

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

"Android Developers Revolt." "Android Developers Flee to iPhone Platform."
The headlines on tech blogs lately are starting to read like supermarket tabloids, so I dug a little bit deeper to see if all the smoke has a fire behind it. What did I find?
Yes, there is a petition asking for more information from Google. Yes, I read it. But here's what it looks like to me: a vocal minority of Android Developers are frustrated and comparing the Android development process to [...]

iPhone App Store: Eliminating the Competition

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I think the very first icon I clicked on my iPhone was the one for the App Store. After all the hype for the App Store, I wanted to know exactly what ELSE I could be doing with the phone besides what Apple intended.
Available through both the iPhone as well as the iTunes Store, the apps are sorted into categories for easier browsing, as well as other lists such as most recently added and most downloaded. Prices are clearly marked, [...]

My Husband Went to the Apple Store…

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

… and all I got was this bricked iPhone.
You may have heard something or other about a phone that got released today? I didn't even go stand in line, bad tech blogger that I am, but my husband gleefully stood in line for nearly four hours to get his phone, and surprised me with one (even after my well-documented complaints) as well thanks to the largesse of a gift certificate that had been planned for the pre-3G phone pricing.
A summary [...]
