Paul Glazowski

Research by the Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers shows that an “advertising surge in 2006” on the Web in the UK pushed the net sum spent for ad space past that of national newspapers as a whole, reports the BBC. Online placements made up 12.4% of the United Kingdom’s total market. In total, advertisers purchased 2.01 billion pounds of advert space on the Web.
What does this show? It shows that everything from the online version of The Register to the many [...]

Web TV using your house's power circuit, Devolo raises the bar in connectivity solutions.
Web 2.0 has been the most sensational networking, innovation and communication venue of the last year or two. When we think of technology and Web 2.0 we generally focus on Web companies, startups, widgets or user empowered communities. There is another aspect to Web 2.0 that often goes unnoticed, and that is the home or business architecture that will be integrated into Web 3.0 and above. [...]

Fable 2 Sends Love

Phil Butler

Technology seems to be knocking at the door of “separate reality” as programmers and engineers push the envelope towards human integration and interactivity. Nowhere is this clearer than in the gaming industry, as one after another programmers scratch at the edges of human emotion and enjoyment.
Peter Molyneux is setting out to put love into the next version of Fable. In this version of the ever popular RPG, Molyneux sees love as the key element that has been missing in [...]

Wow! MMO’s Signal Web 3.0?

Phil Butler

Could we be witnessing Web 3.0 and not even know it? Virtual worlds exist all around us, yet we really do not think of them in that way. I remember playing a game called Counterstrike, where thousands, even millions of people acted out their Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist fantasies every night, and still do. The advent of MMO's (Massive Multiplayer Online games) like Warcraft has been under our radar in the Web 2.0 world to an extent.
In fact gaming in general is [...]

Paul Glazowski

A few days ago I did do a half-and-half about politics and tech, so it might come as a downer that I bring you yet another mix of the two. It is a mix we at Profy rarely touch upon (we know how volatile things can get) but today’s climate calls for closer attention to both “industries”, so here’s another such item for you.
Bill Thompson, a journalist and regular commentator for the BBC, recently spoke about the Net’s growing influence [...]

Phil Butler

An Egyptian court sentenced a blogger to four years in prison for insulting Islam and Egypt's president. The trial of Abdel Kareem Soliman is the first time a blogger has been prosecuted in Egypt. Soliman used his blog to criticize Egypt's top Islamic institution al-Azhar, and the blogger also called President Hosni Mubarak a dictator.
A human rights group called the verdict: "very tough" and a "strong message" to Egypt's bloggers. The 22 year old Soliman was tried in [...]

Phil Butler

Robot ornithologists search for rare bird! Birdwatchers have a new high-tech weapon in their arsenal, an automated birdwatcher-robot. According to the press release, the new device has been placed in a US wildlife reserve in Arkansas to catch a fleeting glimpse of the elusive Ivory Billed Woodpecker (not to be confuse with its cousin Woody). This woodpecker was once thought to be extinct, but sightings in 2004 have renewed hope that the bird still exists. The observation robot uses two [...]
